"Says who? Our understanding increases almost exponentially everyday, as long as we continue to seek it out"

Maybe your understanding expands greatly every day... but It's hard to expand my knowledge in such a grey area as things we are discussing, because of lack of information, large numbers of evidence, and many other factors.
Also, how do you know that your understanding of the universe is the right one? Or how it actually happens..? because its your personal explanation for it all? What happens when your knowledge fails where you thought you understood it all?

Ah! That was certainly an ingenious formulation

Some funky thoughts.

But hey - if the universe has just been discovered as 13 billion years old, then this galaxy has come from before time! Before the rest of the universe.

Or are we saying the previous estimate of the universe's age was at 15-20 billion years - wrong?

Or are we saying we believe what we read?

or are we saying science is not accurate?

Or are we saying that extrapolating material fact from spiritual beginnings is impossible. All we know is that spirit is there, and science cannot explain it. Science is always going to be lacking in this department, science is a useful tool there can be no doubt, but it never answers the end question. It is built on a presupposition, and thus eventually it is built on nothing. And that nothing is the illogic we all love. It is love itself. Somehow someway - and that love has set you on your journey. So it's time to ride!
Somehow we are imbedded in a kind of 'superbeing' which may control every quarkian quiver, or it may be as clueless as me (but on a universal scale). The thing is, it exists, and we are as essential to it in our being as our beating heart is to us.

So live it up and let roll. Your part is large, look at it through your eyes, it's the main part. Every part is the main part. Hey tbe infantessimal blood cells within me are fundamentally important to my existing (as their universe)- you see it's that simple

kind of.... well fuck knows...

Very well put.. I think this answers many of my questions, and I had my suspicions. As far as this :

"Somehow we are imbedded in a kind of 'superbeing' which may control every quarkian quiver, or it may be as clueless as me (but on a universal scale). The thing is, it exists, and we are as essential to it in our being as our beating heart is to us"

I agree that we are part of some sort of "larger picture" if you dont mind me changing your words around... but as far as us being just as important the the whole system of it all, as our heart is to us.. how can you say this? Please backitup : )

Umm.m... who, pray tell, has the answer to the "end" question? Nobody.

2experimental, you sound a little desperate out there. It doesn't make sense to me why you consider it so important to believe in a higher power.

Belief in a 'higher' being or creator (etc) is typical behavior.  Why do you seem so surprised, Squatting_Otter?

I'm not suprised as in "shocked"

I just don't see the need, that's all. There's no reason to be afraid, and I see the need to close the lid on all the mystery of the universe by clinging to the concept of a higher power coming from fear.

Hmm, maybe if I briefly described my perspective...

If there is nothing more to existence than this biological machine called life, then I'd be quite dissatisfied...a tad angry...and a bit afraid.  Luckily, my subtle sense of spirituality (and my search for more) extinguishes those feelings of fear and anger  :smirk:

I see the need to close the lid on all the mystery of the universe
I'm (mostly) a man of science, so I'm always more open to logical explanations...yet, I maintain that that spiritual buffer zone for areas not yet available to conventional explanation

I said "our understanding". As in, our collective consciousness. I have no knowledge of architecture.. it is really a grey area. However, buildings are still being blueprinted every day. There is a massive amount of knowledge being held and passed along. Every person has a piece of the puzzle.... collective consciousness.

Our evolution has been all about expanding our knowledge, starting with a grey area and venturing out, building an understanding... to say that we are incapable of understanding a beginning to the Universe or an eternal Universe is sort of short-sighted, I think.

Considering that we were once in a position in "time" where the concept of architecture didn't even exist to us. We started picking up bits and pieces of the concept and now we can build massive skyscrapers to serve as target practice for Islamic militants... and while I have no real understanding of the concept of architecture, I could decide to explore that grey area and map it out....

To think that we will never be able to comprehend something unconceivable now belies the fact of our evolution. Especially since the concept of an infinite Universe already makes a lot of sense to a lot of people....

As far as "never being able to know if our understanding is the right one?", you will NEVER know with certitude. The pattern could keep on repeating until one day the number "8" pops right on up and changes everything. It could keep going, "23232345232323452323234523232345". After a million times, "8" shows up and then the pattern is completely changed.. a million "232345"'s and then an "8", and then THAT repeats...

Or maybe even a million "23232345"'s, and then an "8", and then a half a million "23232345"'s, and then a "5", and then another half million "23232345"'s, and then another "5", and then ALL OF THAT repeats.... you NEVER know what could be around the corner, no matter how stable and orderly the pattern has been so far. Welcome to chaos!

Our whole "Universe" could just be the physical manifestation of a stream of energy flowing in a different dimension, flowing along with other conscious, living flows of energy.... this particular band of energy could only exist for a parallel of seconds, but we would experience it as billions of years... one day it could all end or wash into a seperate band of energy and EVERYTHING could totally change. We'll never know until we put ourselves in the perspective to know.

All we can do is continue to build our understanding from our position, here and now. We've started off adopting caverns as our homes, and now we hire people to construct them from any assortment of building materials... we even have electricity and running water. Our understanding of the universe continues further everyday... To label certain current boundaries as uncrossable is futile, as there will ALWAYS be someone willing to push that line...
Peace.
