Re: famous philosophers and scientists of our time... [Re: Swami]

This is a good post. Probably because its hard to come up with a good answer. I think a large part of it is the growing disappearance of leisure time. We, particularly in america, work alot of hours. Many more hours than we should. And our free time usually consists of recovering from work. Work and recovering from work. I know people who work stressed filled days, ride in infuriating traffic to get home and plop down in front of the TV. not because they are lazy, but because they're just fucking spent. There is no time for recreational thinking. And if you look at history thats where most of our marvelous inventions and ideas have come from. Recreation and fun. It seems today science is too much propelled by "how can I sell this thing". Which is why the Howard Hughes Institute is so interesting because the focus on discovery for the sake of discovery. Most of humans greatest inventions got their start as toys. We are a fun loving species and we are being denied that. Oddly we seem to be volunteering to deny ourselves that. In countries where work is more reasonable there is a far greater interest in philosophy, art, science, discovery, wonder, nature.

Theres also an element of not being gratified quickly with philosophy. We seem to want an answer. I like philosophy and I can tell you that the more you read it, the more you feel you must read. Its not a subject that seems to have a definite end. And of course as we become more consumer driven, we want our goddamn answers right now!

Hey, nice replies everyone, here's some replies that really stuck out for me, and all of them make up
part of the answer to my question:

Great minds are usually only appreciated after they are gone.

we are bombarded by adverts all our lives which tell us not to think, but consume

the lack of public philosophers/scientists as role models (if you will) is a reflection of the shallow values of our society right now.

There is no time for (recreational) thinking.

I agree with all of this..but what should i make out of it?

Well, to me, this tells me that most of us are caught up in the system and in the society of consumers, but we still have great potential to learn things because science and philosophy is knowledge that is getting more and more popularized (easier of access and understanding).

So my theory is that the next famous philopher and scientist is human kind itself! The whole of it could probably stumble upon something really great that will have an important impact on the way we perceive reality, and thus on the way we think and behave.

Or maybe that's just a lame hope of mine...

Quite clearly, society now doesn't give a shit about deeper matters.

"Society" like "the government" is merely an idea, not a solid reality. If you are concerned about deeper matters and you are definitely part of a society, then what are you saying? Be concerned ONLY with your own remaking of the world and forget trying to mold others into what you think they should be. Does your apparent anger add to the noise or to the solution?

I wrote 'society' because that was the closest definition to what I was trying to reffer to. I didn't really present a solution. When I say 'society doesnt give a shit about deeper matters', I mean that our society is driven by consumerism, it pervades every aspect of our lives, just turn on the TV, and you are going to be bombarded by adverts which are designed to appeal to our basest, selfish instincts, such as greed. As adults we can see through it, but kids especially are very easily manipulated. When I go to the supermarket I can see all around me kids hassling their mothers and fathers to buy crap which is heavily advertised. They are raised by TV, and the message TV sends out is basically, being greedy is not a bad thing, you should be greedy and that the only purpose in life is to acquire possessions, and to chace base pleasure. It is this which I think is the cause of the selfishness which pervades life today. My proposed solution is to try to raise our kids to believe that there is more to life than greed and pleasure seeking. But our entire economy is driven by us being greedy, if people were happy with themselves and what they had, and that happiness cannot be acquired by simply owning loads of useless shit, then there would be a huge recession as so called 'consumer confidence' would plummet. The problem is that economic competition forces countries to embrace consumerism, which while good for the gross national product, is not good for the gross national happines. Governments should put the happiness and welfare of its citizens before economic growth. But in the current competitive international economic climate it is just not going to happen. So the only thing I can do is be pissed off really...
