Re: Hypothetical Question for Conservatives [Re: silversoul7]

Do I have to support a child I wasn't involved in the conception of?

It is not the place of the government to educate anyone.

I'm always amazed when the same people who claim they don't trust the government scream for that same government to educate their children.

Really? Perhaps you'd care to show me where I've ever advocated a path different from the one laid out by the constitution?

haha. that's good. i'd like to hear that one explained.

we've got dozens of people here with no respect for the 2nd or 10th amendments or the electoral process... but luvdemshrooms is the great enemy of the consitution... i really would just love to see that explained....

i think we should all be angry and unhappy

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that point. I prefer peace of mind and try not to let what others think disturb me. There are numerous pov's that are totally asinine. But as I cannot change that I prefer to accept it.

Amendment X
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.

Where in the Constitution of the United States does it specifically say that no body of government may not tax people?

And if the Constitution does say that it is another place where it might be flawed. You know me well enough by now to know I don't bow down to that document like it is Holy Writ. It was flawed at the time of it's inception.

Sorry, but as the 10th specifically says, unless a power is granted to the feds by the constitutionb, then it is not for them to do so.

It's a very plainly written amendment.

I bow to nothing. However it is the foundation of this country. I do not find it flawed. It only seems so to many because the phrases used and the definitions of some of the words, has changed over the years. A changed definition is meaningless. When the amendments are read with the original definition taken into account the problem goes away.

Still waiting to see this explained...

I suspect I'll never see you try. Or at least, seriously try. Because it can't be done.

I guess so. However it's only because in my life I've been accused of many things. Some true, some not.

But never anthing as foolish as me fitting the bill of someone who'd gladly toss the constitution aside for any reason.

I found that...... amusing.

When did the federal government first begin to tax?

The 16th amendment was enacted in 1913. This created the current federal tax system. There is much debate whether this amendment was properly ratified, but that is another issue...

This wasnt the first attempt at federal tax, but other attempts were short-lived...

Interestingly, to get the 16th amendment through, its proponents were saying that it would be no more than 3 percent ever...

Of course the text of the amendment sets no limit to how much they can tax.

The constitution is outdated. Do you think we should use a document created by people with no conception of the world today to guide the way we live.

Your passion for the constitution reminds me of religous fundamentalists blindly adhering to their holy book of choice.

  The constitution is not outdated which is why there is a clearly laid out procedure for making changes. Or perhaps you don't like the right to assemble, the right to a free press, the right not to incriminate yourself and so on.

Hello? Is there anybody in there?

Your opinion of the constitution of a country you don't even live in reminds me of the guy who should have been smart enough to keep his mouth shut but wasn't.

So you are telling me the constitution has been completely changed to deal with a world that is completely different? I doubt whether is has been updated as fast as the world has changed.

The point I was getting at is that you seem inclined to follow it blindly because you appear to believe it is infallible and perfect.

Quote:

"A government owned business would be as loathsome as welfare. It's not allowed in the constitution. "

"I don't dismiss your point of view out of hand. I do it based on the constitution. "

"Perhaps you'd care to show me where I've ever advocated a path different from the one laid out by the constitution? "

Sounds to me like you use the constitution as a shortcut to thinking.

Sounds to me like you're the guy I spoke of earlier.

The constitution can be, and has been, changed. Until such time as it is again, it remains a well thought out document.

Funny how those who think it is no longer useful are those who don't like it as written. It is a guide that has served us well for years and will do so for years to come.

Knowing that you dislike it only shows just how valuable it truly is.

I didnt say I dislike it though. I merely suggested that as it was formulated in a time gone by it may not be as applicable now as it once was.

The beauty of it is, that it is still applicable. Unless you don't think it was a good idea to specify what the government can and cannot do.

just because you dont agree with the things the constitution says doesnt make it wrong or outdated.  i wouldnt say the world has changed so much as expanded.  besides, like luvdemshrooms said there are ways of modifying the constitution.  unfortunately for a fair portion of our lives we have little or no say in such affairs.  eventually the world will be yours and you'll be fucking it up according to many of those who follow you.  wait your turn
