unemployment and opportunity in America

In America (and I assume by now most countries on Earth), in 2015 there are not many opportunities to do a whole lot.  This is regardless of personal worth, strength of character or, most importantly, ability and potential skill.  There are very many millions of able-bodied, competent people who are unemployed or underemployed.  The crisis is here, now, although it appears no one who can reach a wide audience seems willing or inclined to bring it up.

Are you claiming this is different or new?

I worked in a restaurant after college.  A hundred years ago I wouldn't have had the opportunity to go to college or work in a restaurant.

What is the solution?  Technological innovation is quickly taking over the job industry, leaving many capable, willing, people out of work.  Eventually we will get to the point where there simply are not enough jobs for everyone, and then what do we do? 

Society is currently structured around every household working to make money to provide for their needs.  When suddenly they find that they cannot work, do we move into a different type of society?  Do the poorest and unskilled get left behind to die?  Or do we enter a renaissance period in which the arts flourish again?

These are precisely the right questions.  Indeed, we will, in the not-too-distant future, be forced to organize society around something other than employment.  There will be no other choice.  I am not optimistic that this transition will be a smooth one, given the current attitudes of those in power.

Oh I have no idea.  That's something that would have to organically emerge over time, through many people working in concert, and via economic and technological evolution.  It's basically like someone asking what the world will be like in fifty years.  There's just no way to know ahead of time, even for sci-fi authors.:smile:

I wouldn't mind having AI make my money for sustenance (AI mass farming included), allowing time and space for pure creativity and aesthetic focus.

I definitely wouldn't, either, but we're going to have a bumpy road getting to that place.  An AI-fueled utopia won't happen overnight.  There are going to be some massive, unprecedented problems along the way.  And so far we're not planning for it at all.

Some are planning on it IMO. They are planning to have the bulk of the resources in their favor so that when other folks are out of jobs they can still live comfortably. They just aren't planning on including you or me :lol:

The problem with this, though, is that these folks still have to pay other people to defend their resources. Without a paid police force, for example, the amount of wealth that you could amass would be limited by the fact that other people would just come and take it and there's nothing you could do about it.

In a world of free abundance, it's unlikely that anyone would work as private security, because what would motivate you to risk your life defending someone else's excess of wealth when you already had a comfortable standard of living provided for by automation?

In my opinion the sort of easy wealth that Divided Quantum is talking about would have a profoundly democratising effect on the entire world, for the reason that an absence of economic desperation would lead to an absence of jobs where you abuse other people to make a buck.

Sure, but India is poor as shit and has a crime rate that reflects the poverty and desperation endemic to that society.

If there was a superabundance of wealth, who would rob anyone? Who would burgle anyone? Who would start a sweatshop? There would still be rapes and the odd psychopathic serial killer, I suppose.

If there was a utopia, it would be utopian -- sure, great.

I'm working with what's here now and observing the uses of technology as they emerge. It's quite a bit closer to dystopian and very ugly IMO.
