The problem with Atheism
    #12742164 -

I found this documentary which I thought was kinda interesting. I don't agree with everything that is being said in this documentary. However, I do feel they make some important points in regard to Atheism and how it is very similar to organized religion in some ways. The presenter does a decent job at being impartial and ties everything together pretty well. Give it a watch if you haven't seen it already and let me know what you think.

Yeah, so like, are you going to say what is being discussed? Nobody's gonna watch the video anyways.

All this time I've loved you
And never known your face
All this time I've missed you
And searched this human race
Here is true peace
Here my heart knows calm
Safe in your soul
Bathed in your sighs

It's about atheism showing characteristics that are very similar to those of some religions. It's saying atheists are becoming more extreme in their beliefs and atheism is in a way turning in to a sort of religion.

Well at least they don't worship dead Jewish zombies and pedophiliac rouge ragheads.

So?

What does that have to do with anything?

The difference between not believing in God and really, really not believing in God is zero.

More like a religion?

Do I tithe? No.
Do I recognize a leader? No.
Do I wear funny clothes? No. (Well...)
Do I have irrational rituals? No.
Do I attend service at a building? No.
Do I observe silly holidays? No.
Do I purposely gather with other atheists? No.
Must I observe arbitrary moral codes? No.
Must I suspend rationality? No.

Other than that they are almost identical.

What you are talking about is not a probelem with atheism but a problem with atheists, some atheists, not even all or nearly all, its not really a valid critisism.

Documentary

I watched over 11 minutes of it.  The points covered were:

1. May be as intolerant as religion.
2. Atheism may be as dogmatic as religion.
3. Atheists have become as intransigent about their own view as the people they so despise.
4. Atheism has its gurus and sacred texts.
5. It has temples and unknowable “truths.”
6. Atheism has blood on its hands.  The Soviet regime killed more than 20 million people.
7. Atheism is a belief, a belief in disbelief.
8. Atheism attempts to tell people how to live their lives.
9. Atheism has its lunatic fringe as well.
10. Atheists can be contemptuous of others’ beliefs.
11. Have organizations like American Atheists.

There is no doubt Atheism has an orthodoxy, but an orthopraxy is a little harder to pin down.  People adopt all sorts of "enemies" to give meaning to their lives and blame others for their problems.  The problem is people, not Atheism or Religion.

"If Christians wouldn't pass laws against drugs my life would be better."
"If homosexuals were banned from society my life would be better."

Nonsense.  Under normal circumstances in the United States, the laws do not cause unhappiness.  "Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be." Abraham Lincoln

Nietzsche said exactly what is happening here....
I'm an atheist because I have no proof to believe in god that outweighs my atheism so as an atheist I make it not an issue in relevance to any scientific thinking I do. God is irrelevant and so is his non existence. I think you should be an atheist only if you say it because theism has nothing to do with how you live. Because if you don't believe god you have no reason to live, unless you make your own lifestyle in self pleasure through maximizing the higher pleasures which expands beyond self gratification.

Maybe that second one is nonsense, since the existence of homosexuals does not in any way impose on one's freedom, but the first one is obviously reasonable since laws against drugs do impose on one's freedom.

Everything imposes on everything's freedom. It's physics and the butterfly effect. Just because something doesn't bother you and seems to be reasonable it doesn't deny the fact that it is negatively impacting someone else. Heisenberg's uncertainty principle shows us in relative terms the more we know about one thing we fail to recognize obvious duality between concepts.

Heisenberg's uncertainty principle is misapplied here.  He was speaking of entities as potentia, i.e. entities with the potential for existence, not, as you claim, conceptual knowledge.

Well if you watch the video you'll understand that they do state that no one knows what happened before the big bang.  They do state that they can use informed speculation, yet it is still just speculation.  Claiming that speculation as fact isn't science; it's exactly what Atheists claim to hate about Theists.  Therefore, science would support agnosticism.  Atheism is still just that blind leap of faith into something that cannot be proven through empirical data, therefore it's foolish to say that science supports it.

Edited for clarity

Well  that's a given--we can't control everything, but we certainly can control laws, and laws which impose too much on peoples' freedoms are inappropriate IMO.

If I am using drugs in my home and some asshole hundreds of miles away feels 'negatively impacted' by this, then that is his/her choice and isn't any of my concern/business/responsibility whatsoever. Same thing applies if I were a faggot and were having sex with some dude in my room.

Why you would defend people who get so easily offended by others' private business is beyond me, and frankly, I think it's really fucking retarded.

I am happy to announce that I am currently working on a version of atheism designed for more popular appeal, which does include worshipping a dead Jewish guy, and some pedophile too probably, though I'm not sure if he should be dead or alive, we will probably end up going for a comatose pedophile.

Atheism is not a philosophy, it is a statement on metaphysics to which one proclaims that they do not believe in the supernatural.

One could be a Fascist and still, be an atheist, one could be a Socialist dictator or sympathizer and still be an atheist. Atheism says very little about the totality of one philosophical convictions, It only states that one is not in the habit of believing in complete nonsense when it comes to metaphysics. It is in essence a statement of a negative and not a positive affirmation of any consistent philosophical outlook.

Anyways, I am not going to get in the habit of posting in this forum, thats for sure.

In its most broad definition, it is merely the absence of a belief in God or any other supernatural deities.
