Fat Content in BRF?
    #1101547 - 12/01/02 06:07 PM (21 years, 3 months ago)

I have already posted this question in the newbie forum-twice, and have still recieved no replie whatsoever, and I even asked if I should bring the question to this forum-still no answer. So I was wondering if y'all might indulge a newbie and answer a question for me, since the others don't seem to know.

My question has to do with a fatty looking substance in my uninnoculated jars of PF tek substrate. They were sterilized according to the tek and left to cool overnight, and when removed had a fatty, not fuzzy furry, or any of that. Does this have to do with fat content in the BRF?

I would greatly apprciate any sort of reply to this, even if you must "flame" me first-
I am a smart fellow-quite curious, and have done or read around 200-300 pages or so of research thus far- I assure that if I could have this answer somwhere else I would have. Thank you.

Not sure what you mean by a fatty looking substance. What color are you seeing?

Here I tried to take a picture, but I'm not sure how it will look on your end. It's not fuzzy, but rather it looks to be the consistency of the the gresy fat left on ground beef when it gets cold. Thanks a ton for the help. Since I have not innoculated them yet and I let them cool all night inside a brand new pressure cooker, I dont think its the shit.

I think what you are seeing is the brown rice flour thats mixed in the vermiculite. Does have an odd look to it. I ordered my very first jars already sterilized from Micron Magic so I had an idea of what the jars should look like when I finally did my own. Helped alot. They should be okay if you followed the instructions. Good luck with your first grow.

Just a thought. If you go to the grow log forum there are alot of pics of jars just sterilized with BRF, might give you an idea of what they should look like.

Rice is fat free food. Can't be fat, unless someone added it.

white rice is fat free. brown rice isn't, because of the outer coating. it doesn't matter anyways, it's a small amount, and I've never had any problems. unless you opened the jar and look at it and touched it to make sure it was fatty, your paranoid and it's nothing to worry about.

How heavy are the jars? My friend has had a few that have had water get into them during the sterilzation process. Everything is one big solid mass then with no pockets of air, and I guess the appearance could be described as "fatty looking".

Did any of your jars not turn out that way? If so, are they lighter?

If this does end up being your problem, when you PC you can simply wrap the top of the jars like usual, but then wrap the bottom of the jar too so that it overlaps the top piece of foil. He hasn't had that problem since he's started doing that.

Hope it helps.
