millet problem
    #1006641 -

this is my first try with millet (i normally do rye). reason is i want to grow pan cyans, and i understand that millet is better than rye for pan cyans, as less subject to contams. so, i pcd for 75 ms pint jars filled with 140ml millet and 80ml water. i did not add gypsum nor did I shake the jars immediately after pcing. so, when i opened my pc the next day, i foud the millet almost completely clumped. i tried banging the jars on mi kitchen's counter, with little success. so, my question is: IS THERE ANY WAY I CAN USE THESE JARS  or would it be a waste of time, and i should simply through the clumped jars out and start all over again?

I haven't used millet yet but I see no reason why you couldn't open the jars, break up the clumps and re-sterilize.
Someone will soon tell you why they clumped. Prob not shaking after pcing.

Yes, he can do this.

>Someone will soon tell you why they clumped. Prob not shaking after pcing.
Exactly. Allways shake while still very hot, then put back into pressure cooker and let cool down.

anno, will your fungifun ratios work for pure millet, or are they based on your brand of birdseed?

ok, thanks. problem is won't have access to a pc for a while. would full sterilization be required again (1hr@15psi)? or, given the prior sterilization, could i expect to be able to kill otherwise (boiling? steaming? other?) the (hopefully few) airborne contams to which the millet may be exposed upon opening the jars?

When I first started I couldn't afford a pc either so you bum the cash, keep the reciept, & return the fucker
Go agar, isolate(fuck multisore injections), grain2grain, case. ANYONE can do it the first time out as long as you're meticulous. All the steps are out there(but please buy a book). Watch some sci-fi movie and pretend[if you have to]that you're dealing with some uncurable toxin. That all procedures & growth parameters must be met in order for you to survive. Success will be guarenteed. It ain't hard just time consuming.

Yes.
But still, as it also says at the site, millet is not the same as millet.
The qualities vary.
If the formula gives you a too wet or dry substrate, use less or more water.

I have had no problems with birdseed (50% millet, 50% canary seed).  I just do as Mickey Rouke suggest....

I just simmer high millet birdseed for 30-45 minutes, rinse, and then strain. Let the grain dry for 15 minutes or so, then pack your jars and PC. Perfect water content every time.

AND no clumping !! :smirk:

also make sure the millet you use is the seed form, which means it's unhusked and not bought at a health food store. the millet we need to use is the millet found in birdseed, not the millet humans use to eat. I, by mistake bought millet from a healthfood store along with my rye berries one time... what a f-ing mess that was. it clumped and didn't expand at all.. when I got done pc-ing and tried to shake.. all I found was a gooey mess.

When I have ran into this prob in the past I have reheated the jars in the PC for several minutes. This softens the birdseed and allows for shaking.

having ascertained that i used the wrong millet (human consumpt type), is it still worth wile to try to save these jars? normally i would have thrown out the lot already, but, as i said i have no access to my pc here now + pan cyan myc is on its way .... coming along quite nicely (actually, remeber my microwave alert post? seriously, after the explosion i inoculated the oven itself with multispore sys, orissa and pan cyan. actually germinated real quick, the whole oven turned into a f mess loaded with contamns of every possible color, shape, etc. still i was able to cut out a few patches hee and there, placed he in C2O2 petris, so far 1 week later no sign of contams, looking healthy & growing nicely). so, what about those millet jars?
