Exploded Millet kernels
    #1297396 - 02/10/03 05:44 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Ok.. so I used Annos tek pretty much.. just with 100 grams seed 75 grams water. Hartz Parakeet seed which is 90% white millet 10% oat groats. I pc'd for 1 hour at 15psi.. when I took them out and shook a lot of the kernals were exploded..

question is.. this has never happened before, this is a new seed for me, will this hurt anything?

Any help is appriciated.

Maybe...

If everything is clean you should be OK.

You will have to play with the water content for the seed you purchase. Different seed sources will have different water content and therefor need different quantities of water to hydrate correctly.

I PC my millet for 55 min. If I PC too long or add too much water I get exploded kernals as well.

Yes, in fact you can figure out the moisture content from your source buy drying a 100g. sample in the oven for an hour or so at 350 F. then re-weighing it after it has cooled. The difference is the percentage of your sources water content. With this information, you can then calculate the exact amount of water needed to achieve a chosen water content.

Just make a few test jars with varying water content (less than you used now) and compare the results.
A few exploded kernels are normal, the bulk should stay whole though.

i ignore water content entirely by using the tek where you soak the birdseed for 24 hours and then drain it for 30 minutes. no measuring water or seed at all and it came out perfect both times so far.

The water content looks perfect, it's just that the kernels are exploded.. i'd say 60% of the kernals in the jars are exploded. Question is.. will this hurt anything?

6T WBS Tek (Wild Bird Seed) Bulk Spawn Preparation Method.

WBS consists primarily of white millet. It is often a combination of white, red millet & milo - with a small percentage of sunflower seeds and sometimes tiny amounts of crushed corn. Some expensive brands are coated with a fungicide. For use as spawn material, treated WBS is not advisable.

You can find untreated WBS in 5 -10 & 20 pound bags, at low prices at most large chain grocery stores, or chain type pet supply stores. For instance, PetsMart has 40 pound bags for around $8.

Simply place whatever quantity you intend to use in a plastic pot, tub or bucket. Bear in mind, dry seed will expand about 20 to 25% - after it absorbs its capacity of water. Add tap water & soak the seed overnight. A 8 to 12 hour soak works fine. Seed soaked longer will begin to ferment. But, is still usable after soaking up to 24 hours.

There is no need to remove any floating husks, or sunflower seeds. These add lignin ( a good thing) & do not harbor any more possible contams than does the millet. It is all going to get thoroughly sterilized - anyway.

Once soaked, simply rinse the seed very thoroughly in a colander, or strainer. Then allow it to drain - WELL. As in 30 or more minutes. If it is drips - one drop. It is not drained - WELL.

Load pint or quart jars ? full, apply internal filter disk, material, polyfil or whatever method you use allow gas exchange through a ? or 3/8 inch hole in the lid. Screw lid on tight & back it off ? turn. Place a double layer of paper coffee filters over the lid & jar top, held down by a thick rubber band. Place the jars in the PC.

PC at 15 pounds for a full 60 minutes. 90 minutes is better, if you have the time. Allow the PC pressure to drop to zero & let it cool a bit. Open while still hot & remove jars. The paper coffee filters will dry almost instantly, when the PC is opened. Tighten lids (if necessary), shake jars to insure there are no clumps of seed inside. Place jars inside the oven on a rack, to cool, overnight. External coffee filters simply add another layer of protection to the jars content.

Once cooled to room temperature, store in a clean cardboard box - until used. Using them sooner than later is preferable. Note: This method was done in an All American PC. Some brands with a weighted pressure system require more internal water & it may be advisable to also cover the coffee filters with tin foil- while PC'ing, so no excess boiling water gains entry into the jars. Simply remove the tinfoil when you remove the jars from the PC.

SixTango i've used your tek several times, initially I liked it.. but I find it to be less consistant than the add seed, water and pressure cook method. I tend to get a wet spot bacteria a lot easier your way.. it works, but it's not as consistant as using a digital gram scale and weighing it out perfect.

The only reason I had issues this time is cuz I used a new seed, it is 90% white millet, 10% oat groats.. nothing else, no sunflour seed or red millet.. it looks to be optium from a nutrient aspect. I think my problem may have been pressure cooking to high.. I use a Mirro PC with no gauge and I think it was up near 18PSI instead of 15. I went for an hour solid... but like I said.. water content seems perfect. 100 grams seed 70-75 grams water. And yes I can still shake, they shake fine. Hopefully it will all work out.

worked perfect for me so far. 3 casings fruiting beautifully.

How long did you let the seed drain for? I let mine go an hour and it still came out to wet.. a lot of the jars wouldn't germinate because of wet spot.

Well isn't it more or less doing the same thing? I'm still going to have enough room to shake. I'll let you know how they turn out in about 20 minutes, they're in the PC now.

The jars look pretty much the same as the last ones, lots of exploded kernals.. i'm sure it's the seed i'm using. The pressure cooker I have is a piece of shit as well, that may be it also. I am looking on ebay for a new PC with a gauge.

Well...no.
What I propose is to make a batch with
120 g seed and
65
70
75
80 g water.

4 jars. Then you inoculate the jars and see which performs best.

As for the pressure cooker, I have 4 of them(various sizes and models) and none has a gauge.

Well with you saying that, then I firmly believe it was the seed I used. Anno you don't use a Mirro PC do you?

Next time I will use regular birdseed again.

No, the biggest is a Maitre's 21 quart followed by a Hawkins 10 quart.

BTW, I?m writing on a Pressure cooking FAQ in the moment.

Yeah, I use a Mirro, and i've had other people who are better cultivators tell me they've used them and think they're shit too.

My mirro is the only one i've ever used, it's cheap, I really need a better quality one that works better.

The jars are in the incubator, I really hope they work out.
