Yes, i think spores take longer on birdseed because of the gaps between the seeds. Its probably harder for the beginning mycelium to take hold (never shake in the early stages). I have found that grain transfers work exceptionally well with birdseed, however. My friend often gets a quart jar colonized in under 5 days using transfers. With that kind of colonization speed, minimal efforts are needed to maintain sterility.

Adding a little coir to the millet seems to work wonders for speeding up colonization. My friend has only run a single test, but the coir/millet jars seemed about 10% faster than just plain millet.

Your tek worked. Thank you much. If I can continue w/ this success I will be very happy. Thank you!

This is for others:

Be careful not to soak the seeds too long, they will take on too much water, two times at 5 minutes each worked for me. I left some soaking for an hour or so and they took on too much water.

Check it out, a PF style birdseed jar...I only had a few quart/pint jars left so I tried it with some 1/2 pint filled to the brim..just seeing how it will work. No filter except for foil..lol

Hey, those jars are looking better than mine!

Glad to have helped, once you get it a couple times, it's old hat; Thanks for the pics. . .the Panellus will be a cool one to get fully colonized, eh?

That's a good point about the soaking; I just bull-rush through it. Submerge, stir, strain, rinse, and load.
