Millet?
    #1145956 - 12/16/02 02:18 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

Hi guys

i just purchased some millet and i'm wondering how you guys prepare it in autoclavable bags. I'm a newbie with millet and i'd like to know what you guys think of it...it certainly is cheaper here for millet than it is rye grain and i think i'd like to switch...how long do you pressure cook it for? also, how much millet and water do you use for an autoclavable bag?

cheers

I usually soak my millet for 8 hours, millet seems to have too much of a varying water content, for my tastes - so i just do the soak, then i strain it for about 30 minutes, and load it into jars/bags. I have only started using autoclave bags for spawn, so i'm not sure if anything differs, although I don't see why it would.

Oh, I PC for 90 minutes at 15psi.

Been experimenting....

I'd strongly suggest some polyfill or wick in the lid,, covered with coffee filters held in place with rubber bands. This allows for some air exchange.

I had some jars with millet injected on Nov 12 , 14, and 20.and the ones on the 20th are done, they were the only ones with the fill. the ones on the 12th and 14th are still going and almost done...

Millet has more of a tendency to clump than rye. A suitable recipe for us to use in 720 ml jars has been equal amounts by weight (NOT by volume). Still, expect some clumped kernels.

As with rye, the more substrate you fill into a container (jar or bag) the less water you should add.

If you are using standard 20x50 cm filter patch bags i would suggest:

*1,5 kg of millet
* 1300, 1200, 1100 and 1000 ml water. It's allways wise to do some testbatches as some types of grain simply absorb more water than others. If you do not plan on doing a testbatch 1,5 kg of millet and 1200 ml of water would be the safest bet IMO.

Since you will be able to shake the bags clumping is not so much an issue compared to when you work with jars.

For some info on using filter patch bags the easy way look  [url=

A bag of spawn like this is the result of the methods described in the links above.

Good luck! Once you get a method that works well for you, working with bags is soooo much easier than working with jars

thanks very much for your replies guys! i think i will try your method una...1.5 kg millet/1200 ml water. Hopefully millet will work for me...then i wouldn't have to pay ?1 for 500 grams of rye grain anymore...it'd be ?1 for 1.5 kilos of millet

woo always great to save money

hmmm millet and rye are the same price here
89 cents per lb

Millet is pretty good if you get the water content down.  Good Luck
