Gypsum & Millet

First, where would one aquire gypsum? Ive heard that hardware stores carry it... what exactly is it used for? Also, when adding gypsum to the millet when/where do you add it?

I plan on soaking the millet overnight in water, then adding a little (very very small) amount of water to the jars, and then loading the jars with the millet and pressure cooking for 1hr @ 15psi. Does this sound ok? Anything else I should do?

I have heard that cooking the millet before loading it into the jars will cause you to have more exploded kernels... while just letting it soak for a long period of time and then loading it.. will help prevent it from exploding before cooking.

Gypsum is carried a lot of nursuries and garden centeres. I haven't had a problem getting it. You'll see on the side of the bag, that its used for keeping soils from clumping together. Its used in the same way for birdseed. It helps it from clumping.

You're going to want to add it when you soak your birdseed. well thats what Ive done and it works. Ive heard if you add it before you put it in the PC it will get kinda weird.

Im still testing my own methods in birdseed preperation...However that sounds like a good idea. I dont think you'll need to put any more water in, maybe try it in a few and see if the mycelium likes it better!

Gypsum is the chalky white stuff they put between the paper sheets in drywall (gypsum board). You would be better off buying it from a garden supply store...

I've used millet quite a few times and have never had a problem with exploded kernels or with clumping. I just boil lit for about 40 min and rinse well.
