Re: Whosoever is delighted in solitude is either a wild beast or a god. [Re: Icelander]

If, as he says, a man can be a beast or a god, then, you could communicate with beasts or gods.

I believe the tacit assumption is that a man is no better than a beast, until he reaches the allegorical godhood of self-realization.

Evidently, such apotheosis confers no particular power upon a man, or, else, I might be afraid to ask for fear of my safety.

Again, I believe that self-realization is not physically evidenced.

And I believe something too. Beliefs are cheap and easy to come by.

Please define self-realization for me.

It is the point in time when man becomes better than a beast. :yesnod:

Please define self-realization for me.

The term has been employed by the oriental philosophers of the New Age Movement.

Self realization is said to be sentience. They equate continuity of thought to immortality, in that the cycle of reincarnation ceases upon death of physical vessel.

When the vessel realizes itself, it is then said to return to the energy of creation and merge with it.

The fact that "immortality" is offered to the doctrinally uninitiated is highly suggestive, IMHO, in that the cultists are pandering to carnal interests.

I acknowledge that I'm using emotionally loaded words, here, but I am willing to be reasonable about this, also.

Sentience means having sense perception, which is a quality shared by many forms of life.  Self-realization requires self-awareness, which is apparently unique to humans.

In the idiomatic use of the word, sentience is equated with self awareness.

As I have specified, some equate self awareness with godhood.

As such, a beastly man may delight in solitude, because he does not like human contact to remind him of his own self awareness.

A godly man, on the other hand, may delight in solitude, because he likes to have the time to reminisce upon his own self awareness, uninterrupted.

Idiomatic meaning incorrect?   When we refer to "sentient beings," does this mean humans, or are we describing all beings with sense perception?

IMHO, the problem with this line of thinking is that a human may wallow in self pity, being fully aware of an unhappy situation. This does not in any way give him the physical authority, which godhood confers.

Depends...

The meaning of words changes over time, and I did not recently "invent" this decades-old idiom, such that I should be corrected for misusing it.

Well, perhaps it is simply that all the sources within my circle of awareness include the correct usage of this word.  Whenever I've read the term "sentient beings," it was correctly referring to animals AND humans.   It's not a major point, but it seems relevant when we are contrasting the metaphor of a 'wild beast' with that of a 'god."

Quote:
http://education.yahoo.com/reference/dictionary/entry/sentient

  1.  Having sense perception; conscious:  "The living knew themselves just sentient puppets on God's stage"    (T.E. Lawrence).
  2. Experiencing sensation or feeling.

This definition of sentient clearly requires that senses must be perceived or experienced, doesn't it?

you missed the analysis, made several posts ago.
