should you challenge yourself in life * 1
    #8257169 -

one of my daughters is going through some tough decisions

in thinking it through she asked me if I thought we should challenge ourselves in life.

I replied

Quote:
personally i agree, I do think that it is important to prepare yourself for challenges;
life throws them at you all the time.
-
to do this, in my opinion, you find a way of being that is not too loose and not too tight and in particular
you find the most honest way to see things and the fairest way to do things.
-
in this way you have a tone of character that will not fail you in any circumstances - you may not win every battle, but you will respect yourself in the morning.
-
on the other hand, planning to have a challenge might be a bit pretend.
or maybe it is kind of superstitious too,
as if,
being challenged by choice might ward away being challenged by chance.

your thoughts?

Good answer

We never know what we could accomplish or become if we dont try. At the end of the day i'm sure the boss upstairs would be happier with someone who can swim upstream when need be, rather than someone who floats.

And there is where God lives, where the dead live, the spirits and the saints, a world where everything has already happened and everything is known. That world talks. It has a language of its own. I report what it says. The sacred mushroom takes me by the hand and brings me to the world where everything is known. It is they, the sacred mushrooms, that speak in a way I can understand.":mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2:

ya, I agree.

There's a psychologist who viewed development as having these "challenges" or something equivilent and the child would need to pass the challenge in order proceed with development.

I think you said the right thing. I mean if you think about it, it's kinda difficult to not challenge yourself everyday.

The best way to live
is to be like water
For water benefits all things
and goes against none of them
It provides for all people
and even cleanses those places
a man is loath to go
In this way it is just like Tao        ~Daodejing

When you think about challenging yourself in some area of your life, you have to ask, "Who is the one challenging, and who is being challenged?"

Challenging oneself should be connected to healing and greater peace. For example, I try to exercise and eat well; these are challenges because I have a strong learned tendency to vegetate in front of a computer for hours and eat foods which drain my energy and sense of wellbeing. Challenging those behaviors is beneficial to me, and will help me cope more with the many challenges which life as a human entails.

“Strengthened by contemplation and study,
I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

My greatest challenge in life has been proceeding despite intense fear. I have found that my optimal growth occurs from challenging myself to persevere when my overwhelming emotional reaction spurs me to freeze or flee. Facing these internal challenges has developed my trust in myself, and my confidence in my ability to rise to the occasion.

I do not think that we need to invent challenges, or pretend that they exist, as we all face the fiery breath of our internal dragons on a regular basis.

challenge may pose as a hindrance towards growth in some aspects

one of my old friends challenged himself to the point of getting straight a's throughout highschool and chemical engineering in university.

he got depressed, joined the army and now is in afghan destroying himself (imo)

depends i guess

Absolutely!

What is a challenge other than doing something you are not already good at?

Welcome evermore to gods and men is the self-helping man.  For him all doors are flung wide: him all tongues greet, all honors crown, all eyes follow with desire.  Our love goes out to him and embraces him, because he did not need it.

I think we all need challenges, but shouldn't be so dependent on the outcomes, the challenges we set ourselves should be playful & joyful, not taken so seriously as one day the fruits of the challenges will be gone, as we all will. Life is all about this playful joy of being, so enjoy it!

Creative challenges are great, but sometimes the mindset of "challenge" can predetermine failure. If something is seen as difficult, it will be difficult!

Id say that if participating in the challenge itself doesn't bring enjoyment,
only the fruits of the labour/challenge, then the challenge isn't worth doing in the first place.

"Id say that if participating in the challenge itself doesn't bring enjoyment,

good piece, enjoyment and harmony among and for anyone,a doctor challenges himself to understand the operation, and saves a life.
a person challenge themselves to grow a garden, and has some green peppers and mushroom for their stew.
Challenge themselves for the fun of dissecting principles and nature of mathematics, to experience the beauty and applications of that..

then there are folk who are hard on themselves, they are regimented just because its a reaction, maybe they feel guilty for not pushing themselves, problem is, they dont realize even though better things are always possible, if you continue to push without any real connection to your effort you risk doing the wrong things, making bad choices and harming yourself or others.
some strive for the feeling of superiority, which fundamentally isnt a dreadful thing until it causes ripples of negativity in the world (and im not talking about those who feel inferior just because the cant hold themselves in comparison, thats just selfishness)

some people are possessed I tell you, just riding the rocket of some inborn dream, they are the really dangerous ones, and the "heroes".

challenges are great, but there is a point of over preparation, over saturation of ideals and concepts.
you could challenge yourself with all the arts but when it comes time to feel the truth of reality, its about being open to challenges, not necessarily being able to play a prefabricated game
