I think they might be mycena, possibly mycena pura > http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Mycena_pura.html

or maybe even Mycena californiensis > http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Mycena_californiensis.html

Are they active or even edible? The edibility is very vague.

No, Mycenas are not active. Not edible either.

Yeah, I like the way they look. Sometimes I just take pics of them for the heck of it. I've seen them in all sorts of colors.

Yeah, the reason I asked is because I saw very similar mushrooms growing off a chunk of log in my backyard. They are cool to look at it person too.

Here are just a few of mine from this year... not really exciting, I've seen them in much more interesting colors, but I usually didn't bother taking pics at the time, which I regret now.

red hypholoma > http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Hypholoma_aurantiaca.html

that's a young one tho, almost a pin..there's another photo of a larger patch. They like the same habitat as cyans, and one of the cyan photos has an old beat up hypholoma in there

Indicator Species for the Bay Area:
(Habitat: wood chips)

1. Hypholoma aurantiaca

2. Tubaria furfuracea

3. Psathyrella gracilis

Anyone got any others to add? Make sure the species are COMMONLY found in Ps. cyanescens and other wood-lover species habitats.

as a note, these species are all common on eucalyptus and juniper mulch and substratum in the bay area, on which substrates [i'm guessing due to antimicrobial resins present in the wood, which both tree species have in spades] P. cyanescens seems disinclined to grow.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.
