yes, all samples we id'ed as ps. cyanofib. There were distint variations between the samples. The main reason reason most of us non scientific folk say they are different is because they are as strong as cyans. Maybe they should be ps. cyanofib vr. san francisco. I talked to the professor and he said the only species in sf were the cyans, and fibs. It takes more then just a random find to distiguish a new species. I told him aboout my stunzi find and he said there isnt stunzis in sf. So it might just have been a random find ffrom the fresh lanscaping bark. We found hundred of stunzis last year but none yet this year at the same spot. Great, i am rambling. oh yeah this was id'ed by shroomery folk

Imagine that! I figured as much :smirk:

I've noticed a good amount of variation in the supposed cyanofibs I've picked up here as well.

I hear the potency thing thrown out here a lot, but I don't think it's really possible for anyone to quantitate potency by eating mushrooms.  sure you can say 1g of these felt equal to 1g of these or whatever, but theres so many variables in the effects of the drug, physiology of the tripper, methods of ingestion and the vigor of the actual mushroom patches, among other things, that it makes those kind of assertions, well, meaningless.  especially when dealing with the more potent species.  I've noticed the cyans from older patches with the thin caps and skinny stems are not as potent as the big fatties from patches on their first flush that turn dark, dark blue right after you pick them, but they're obviously the same species.  that being said, I've eaten local 'cyanofibs' a few times and they were very potent, IMO.

I remember the stuntzii posts from down there last season, just goes to show ya these things are not restricted to their main habitat.

stuntzii grow where they want. same with all mushroom species.

to say stuntzii dont grow 20 minutes drive from where they do grow is absurb.
ive never found them in SF directly, but all around the surrounding area yes. and this is cause i dont hunt SF. some professor of mushrooms he is.

yeah you're right sorry...i was looking at the photo index..there's no photos of fibrillosa or stuntzii.

actually, with fibrillosa being so common now after 5 years you'd think they'd have at least one photo up there

so at the myco fair, everyone is IDing the friscosas as cyanofibs still?

well they could be right, and just as easily could be wrong. Im curious about the guy from erowid calling em friscosas. along with everyone else

my patch finally flushed, but it hasnt rained up here in a week+ they are hurtin for some rain.

maybe I'll borrow a friends digital camera and get some monterey friscosas up in this thread.

Dry Dry Dry [Re: auweia]
    #6333023 -

Went out today to my usual patches. Besides a sign saying that pesticide had been sprayed and a landscaper tearing up all of the bushes and tall grasses housing some of my cyan patches (bastard!), not too much too report, looks like all is dry on the western front. The only things I could find were these below, they were in typical cyan habitat but didn't seem to by cyans. I had seen them a week before, and let them to grow. By today they were pretty damn dry. The caps were rough and hooked around underneith, and the stems were white with what looked like blue bruising. Only picked one and didn't spore print. Any idea of what they are?

Now I'm no expert but I'd say the pins look like dried cyans, the large tan-capped ones look like fibs.

here is a rundown What I learned at the fair.

4. Shroomery lingo does not fly there. Many people got laughed at including the dude from erowid for calling them friscosas. Friscosas is not an official name so using it at an i.d. booth or in front of the head of mycology isn¡¦t going to fly.

7. It is also ¡§hip¡¨ to talk about psilocybes at the fair but make sure you know the correct pronunciation when talking about it or else you will lose all credibility. Just to clear things up with the noobes it¡¦s pronounced sil-ah-so-be

Anyone else have anything to add?

I had a great time at the fair, went both days and met some cool folks.

The first day I spoke with Dennis Desjardin after his presentation on luminescent mushrooms, about possibly interning at his lab at SF state, as I plan on moving up here within the year.  That went well.

Then I scouted out David Campbell (president of the MSSF) at the ID table, and tagged along with him for much of the fair (like a baby bird- first person I recognize, I follow around  ).

I intended to volunteer at the ID table the second day, as one of the biologists at the ID table i had been talking to on sat had suggested I knew what was what and should help out.
I decided not to because on sat Mike Wood and I had gotten in a little debate (that turned out to be a miscommunication- we were actually on the same page), and he seemed offended about my challenging him yesterday, and I didn't want to be around him while he was bitter towards me. Hehehe, at the end I shook his hand and said it was a pleasure meeting him and what a great recourse his site was, and he seemed to accept that as an unofficial apology i suppose, as he was a pleasure to speak with at the end.

Paul Stamets was milling around the fair on sunday. When I first saw him, he was standing around with David Campbell the MSSF president, and David almost introduced us, but i got shy and left to show the Erowid guy some pics that Notapillow (i hitched a ride with him to the fair) had told him about.

The guy from Erowid called himself Earth, and he was very friendly, and he asked if I'd send the pics to him so that he could display them.

Then eventually I hunted Paul down, hiding in a corner with his laptop, trying not to be noticed by the crowds, and struck up a conversation about the unidentified Psilocybe growing in the Bay Area, informally known as Cyanofriscosa, or Friscosa.

I did not experience the same aloofness from the pros, when referring to the alleged Cyanofriscosa...  Perhaps because I made it clear at the introduction, that is was not a formal latin name, and not even a confirmed separate species.

I also did not experience any cringing from mispronunciation of Psilocybe....  first off, I'd like to say, that I don't think the correct pronunciation is "Sil-oss-oh-bee".
When pronouncing genera such as Clitocybe, you're supposed to make it rhyme with "eye-toss-uh-bee".  So I think Psilocybe should be "Si-loss-uh-bee", with an "eye" sound on the "Si", rather than a "sill" sound at the beginning.
I could be wrong, that was just my observation.
