for 'power', look into webster as well :smile:
The topic is about, what 'influences' you more. Your inner worlds or the outer world (as it often is seen as 'your' outerworld, for the sake of subjective information processing). At this perspective, the outer-world locus of power seems to fade into an illusion....

...as far as I see this. Anybody feel free to fit it into proper relations.

There are influences outside your internal world. Your perspective tends to be subjctive by vritue of being a perspective, but that which is perceived is in many cases, outside your control. It's fallacious to asume that because the subjective value of the perception is internally controlled, that which is perceived is also affected.

Granted, no act exists in isolation - even the act of perception.

Perhaps the problem is in the term "locus" after all? I feel as if there are far more than one centers of influence, both external and internal.

My point re: locus of power is not whether or not you are influenced by outside events, but whether you recognize the choice factor in this influence.

Locus: a center of activity, attention, or concentration.

Power: The ability or official capacity to exercise control; authority.

When we choose to believe that the control/authority over our life experience is centered outside of ourselves, we give up the power to create the experience we desire.

maybe source of motive impulse might be suitable.
i.e.
are you running under your own steam or riccochetting of some external guide walls, like a rat in a maze.

personally I am learning to be the maze and am swimming through it as I like or liking what I must.

the energy fluctuates but the direction is all about making things better.

Yes, but to do that we must first believe that we have the power to take control of our experience.

If we believe that we are passive participants in our own lives, we would never attempt to wrest power away from imaginary others whom we think can control our thoughts and emotions.

I have not ceased to struggle with reality, I've just learned to notice when I am struggling.  :grin:  I've also realized that I prolong my negative emotional reactions through this struggle with realilty.

While I spent many, many, many (:eek:  wait, I'm not THAT old) years trying different philosophical and psychological "remedies" for my misery, the most effectve by far is Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy.

It is a common misapprehension that being rational about one's emotions means that you attempt to eliminate emotionality--become a robot or a Vulcan.  In fact, REBT allows you to enjoy emotionality because you cease to feel victimized by your out-of-control emotional states.

I've posted here many times about my experiences with REBT, so I will not repeat what I've already said.  I recommend any book by Albert Ellis, and any book by Ken Keyes, Jr., who based his work on Ellis' therapeutic methods.

I agree. Our only enemy is ourselves. The movie "fearless" with jet li sums it up well. To defeat an enemy is strength, but to defeat oneself, well, that just might be the whole aim of human existance.

We need not defeat ourselves.  I decided to invite myself over for some pizza & beer.  I talked to myself about ways to live cooperatively, rather than manipulatively or aggressively, and arrived at a peaceful co-existence.  :wink:
