The Illusion of an External Locus of Power
    #6146385 -

Who do you think you are?

Are you creating your experience, or is it happening to you?  Mostly happening, with a smattering of creating?  50/50?

Are you in charge of your thoughts, or are they generated without your participation?  Can you stop them or change them when they do not support your goals?

Are you in charge of your emotional state, or does it occur in direct reaction to changing circumstances?  Can you alter or detach from your emotional state?

I propose that we, as individuals, are 100% responsible for our experience of life.  This is not to say that we control all the circumstances which surround us, but that we control all the responses within us.

We seek out experiences which "prove" our beliefs, for better or worse.  We choose to interact with people who demonstrate our models of humanity, and avoid those who contradict those models.  We choose to limit our exercise of personal power in order to stay within our comfort zone (or more accurately, our discomfort zone).

We opt to dole out our love as though the supply was finite, and offer ourselves little or none of our hoarded heart.

What if we're AMAZING?  Not "only human," but supremely, divinely human.  What if we have the power within us to create and craft this dream of life?  What if the only limits on our experience are self-created?  What if we decided to find out whether or not this is so?

Who do you think you are?

Inspired posting. I agree. (not really though) If I totally agreed I would act 100% on this knowledge. Right now I am in that 50/50% range. But given enough time, experience, and psychedelics and sex, I just might up that average. That's what my personal goals are anyway. :mushroom2:

I search for truth but when I do find it is out of the question that these things I think are alien to me. Somethings that I can not agree with, for starters telekinisis(telepathy). I hear voices sometimes people communicate with me when there is no one there. OBEs I feel I can travel out of my body sometimes only to find fear that someone might communicate back.

Excellent post veritas
"I propose that we, as individuals, are 100% responsible for our experience of life. This is not to say that we control all the circumstances which surround us, but that we control all the responses within us."
I propose to identify those external impulses which distort our perception of comfort. They point to our inner concepts, so one can identify those as well. Once both are identified as those, we are able to choose what one to change is more of value. Changing oneself (our inner realm which is in distinction to the outer reality) or change the outer realm for better personal (but often also altruistic) 'convenience'. Or changing both for meeting in the middle

Last night I watched "Groundhog Day" with my sons & thought about the thought process that goes along with seeing our days as ordinary, boring, "throw away."

Murray's character decides (for a while) that his days are worthless because they are always the same, yet he makes no effort to craft them.  He despairs & spends many days killing himself.  He discovers the value in his days after he tells someone the truth about his experience.

How often do we tell the truth about our experience of life?  What if this is the essential step towards freedom?

I chose my user name (Veritas=truth) to represent my commitment to telling the truth--to myself and to others.  This has been a struggle for me for decades.  I disliked reality, longed for fantasy, and wished that I could be magically transported into a better place.

What a surprise to discover that I was living in that place all along:eek:  The shift was not in the outer world, but in my inner experience.  I was creating all the misery, all the struggle, through my resistance to what IS.  I still do this sometimes, but I also have learned to relax and experience bliss during "ordinary" life.  This is magical, indeed.

This applies only for a somewhat healthy inner responsibility for ones experience of life.

Sometimes I make shit happen, but then it's still shit although sometimes it's good shit. Most of the time I just let shit happen. What's bad is when I get too lazy to clean up after bad shit happens.

The real answer is less shit and more mobility. But, as we get more shit we can't get away from it and even start to like the smell of it. That sweet smell of success (shit).

in groundhog day we see the self begin to assess it's condition
it may not understand it's limits or it's confinement -

the limited self begins to add some positive notions wherever it can and becomes less limited.

One of the most important bits of recognizing the potential for human creation is recognizing also the necessity for dealing with consensus reality. There's a whole lot of world out there - and a whole lot of world that's not experienced by consensus. But that doesn't mean we can discard the consensus.

Do we create our lives? Yes. You are your choices. But do we create 100% of our lives? No. We control it, certainly - we control our responses to stimuli, or rather, we choose it. We're a lot more than the meatbot, but at the same time, we're a lot less than the Universe.

Remember all those patterns? Remember all those connections? Remember how part of that is you? Don't make the mistake of thinking you create the world - you create the phenomenological experience of the world, but those patterns? Those matrices? Those complex iterations of chaos? Those aren't your creation. Those exist on their own.

I'd be remiss from a psychological perspective, though, if I didn't provide some more direct answers, based on science and popular philosophy, just for the sake of completeness.

"Who do you think you are?"

I am.

"Are you creating your experience, or is it happening to you? Mostly happening, with a smattering of creating? 50/50?"

The phenomenological experience is an equal balance of that which is happening, and our perceptions and interpretations of such. Things happen. We then comprehend them. By virtue of the comprehension, we are inserting our own cognitive state onto a situation. It's roughly balanced.

"Are you in charge of your thoughts, or are they generated without your participation? Can you stop them or change them when they do not support your goals?"

Thoughts are complicated things. A large number of them occur without your having a choice in the matter - they're completely reactive to stimuli. However, the way they react, especially in higher executive functioning (the thoughts which take verbal form) is shaped by our own volition - not only do experiences shape the complex machine that is your brainbox; the brainbox itself is self-interactive.

It is possible to take measures to change a way of thinking - it is not normally possible to "stop thinking" about something, without finding adequate distraction, because the nature of thought is such that it is not only abstract, it is also neurochemical. You have to physically stop the neurons from firing - best way to do this, of course, is to distract yourself.

Then there are folks who can do so by act of volition. Takes training, but it can be done.

"Are you in charge of your emotional state, or does it occur in direct reaction to changing circumstances? Can you alter or detach from your emotional state?"

Emotions are also complicated. The predominant theory of emotion is the two-factor theory of emotion: circumstance, setting, and situation provide physiological arousal - the brain then uses context clues to determine which form of arousal that is. Fright can become elation, as the arousal is equivalent, but the situation and the cognitive box determines which way it's interpretted.

Can you alter or detach from it? Most people learn to alter it via changing their situation. Some learn to control it by act of volition. Still others learn to shut it down completely.

As for me myself? Well, I'm weird.

And to end my drift into non-tangential space: I won't be controlled by any totalistic politician or any terrorist or any Tyrant, because I think there is external Locus of Power and I not only must find happiness in myself. I will rip their arse apart to break me free

Sorry for rant, perhaps it can serve for a debate cause

For the sake of continuing the discussion, will someone please specify what we mean by the term "locus of power?" I fail to see its pertinence.

I am aware of the definition of a locus. I think perhaps more accurate would be to ask how we're defining power, and how it is related to this topic?
