Changing Beliefs
    #4016027 -

Words, concepts, perceptions, conceptions are only appropriate to the conditioned world. As long as you're attached to thoughts and to concepts, to views and opinions, no matter how intelligent and altruistic these views might be, that very attachment will bind us to the conditioned realm - we just keep being reborn into it. We keep searching for the unconditioned in the conditioned, we keep looking for God in the mortal condition, in the changingness of sensory consciousness, only to feel totally frustrated and disappointed.

Beliefs don't change, do they? I mean, you can believe in exactly the same things you believed in when you were five when you are fifty! That belief is the grasping of a perception.

There are some beliefs that are very nice, and pretty, and sentimental. The romantic and sentimental view of life presents a pretty picture that we can still believe in even when we're 80! When my Gran died at 75, she still had a 16-year-old girl's emotional development. When she died, she had a boyfriend called 'Hercules Cavalier', who was her gigolo! She still had the same kind of romantic longings as when she was a 16-year-old girl! So even though at 75 she was a physical wreck, yet the mind was still attached to those pretty pictures of youth.

We assume and believe, and never question the prejudice and fixed views that we're grasping, that we never change. They don't change; we keep re-affirming the same old things over and over. And that's why so many political problems arise: it's because so many people hold on to political views, rather than try to be aware of the needs of a particular time and place.

How much violence and meanness and nastiness is done in the name of property alone! And boundaries: 'This is my land, get off my land.' You see it all the time, in the endless border problems of countries. Then the meanness of heart, not wanting to let people in, - or not wanting to let people out! - because of the unquestioned belief, 'This is my house/my family/my wife/my husband/my children, my, my, my....

There is actually nothing worth bothering with that much, because it is not really ours anyway. Of course, we can believe that it's ours. But in actual investigation, in looking into the way the mind actually is, we see that nothing really belongs to us anyway - there's nobody to own anything!

When we are contemplating reality, we can begin to reflect on where there is no self. Whenever there is the cessation of self, there is just clarity, knowing, and contentedness - we feel at ease and balanced. It takes a while to be able to give up all the striving tendencies, and the restless tendencies of the body and mind. But, in moments, that will cease; and there's a real clarity, contented peacefulness. And in that also there is no self, no 'me' and 'my'. We can contemplate that.

Maybe you should question your belief a little further? Does gomp really exist anywhere but in your mind?

Beliefs should be dynamic...always subject to reform through the adoption of new paradigms. Admitting a flawed belief is a liberating experience that expresses true freedom. Flexibility is one of the most valuable traits a human can posses.

"A warrior is a hunter. He calculates everything. That's control. Once his calculations are over, he acts. He lets go. That's abandon. A warrior is not a leaf at the mercy of the wind. No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

It is true that nothing really matters on a cosmic scale, but we were dropped down here with nothing else to do...so we play the game. We have to play by ear because we were given no rules...nothing wrong with that. What else would we do?

Beliefs, and further their dispersal through socio-psychological mechanisms (memes) always change.... Especially when beliefs are open to interpretation and aren't stated in the clearest terms.

Think Christianity in terms of one set of beliefs... it's anything but static in it's interpretation, why their is so many divisions with varying interpretations, which will end up evolving themselves based on variations on the interpretations of the interpretations.

One such example is a few years back with the Episcopal Church. A rift occured over controversy involving homosexuality, I'm not sure if they believers went their seperate ways, or if they started on off shoot of the same belief with a few changes, but it'll change as our attitudes do.

Beyond that, great post, and we definetly need a more dynamic political structure versus all this right-wing, left-wing shit. I dunno, I liken the current political process to gangs. Over in California we have some prominant gangs notably the bloods and the crypts... they do the same exact fucking thing in the long run, the only difference is their affiliation. Yet if they worked together, it'd be better for crime at large.

We claim a belief when we want to escape from the facts and plunge into an unreality.

escapism...sometimes real life is hard to come face to face with.

But any belief held in mind is just grapsing at a particular mode of perception. If we grasp at a certain viewpoint, or belief then it creates the illusion of a solid fact that does'nt exist. Your belief may not be static but you grasp at it, then when things change you either hang on or construct another belief in its place until your perspective changes again in some way, so you fill that gap with yet another belief, this pattern goes on and on and on. The only thing that is a constant is the grasping which prevents you from seeing the truth of the situation. You cling to viewpoints, perspectives and concepts of conditioned reality.

Even if you are dynamicly changing your beliefs you are still grapsing at concepts but in a more loose, subtle, dynamic way, like flicking through the pages of a book quicker rather than grapsing at invidiual pages for a long time. Until we are free from all the misconceptions of beliefs, we are caught in the cycle of accepting and rejecting and can never close the book. However if we can see the unreality and  impermence of all situationsthen we can learn to let go, live and love free from conecpts and attachments to this illusion.......

To believe or not to believe, that has no importance. What matters is to ask yourself more and more quesions.
