Havent tried softened water personally. you have access to an outdoor tap connected to city water?  You could use a coiled tube to condense steam from a pc

Whoever plumbed this house makes my blood pressure rise every time I dig into it. Currently it'd be a pretty big project for me to do. I do however like your pc idea. Definitely a cheaper alternative.

My more direct question though is distilled water adequate vs salt softened water.

Distilled water works great. I primarily use it in lc and spore solution

Question: Would you consume these?

Background (first timer):
Inoculated with African Transeki from a trusted vendor.
I took a week long trip and never did a break and shake on this specific bag.
When I came back it was solid white. This lead me to believe it could be some sort of contam.

I asked about the bag in a post, but didn't get an answer until the following day after I had mixed the bag into coco coir sub.
I was told to pitch the bag, but since I had already mixed, I thought it would be an interesting contam experiment.

I'm not sure if it's luck but this tub is doing the best of all of them.
And need some info on if its a bad idea to consume these.
I got this far, and wasn't expecting it, given all the cultivation rules I short-cutted.

And now I'm at the point of continuing this tub's grow for experimental purposes.
OR
continuing this tub's grow for future consumption.

Pics from today:
I tried to get a few different angles.
The substrate is shrinking significantly, about 1/4 inch around.
The fuzzyness runs up all fruit, I've only seen this as a 'fuzzy feet' type thing.

Nothing wrong with those, a week is pretty fast for grain to colonize but the tub is fine.

Definitely not Transkei though, possibly aa+

I see what you mean with the aa+, but they do look similar enough to the vendor pictures. If this isn't allowed I can remove.

Harvested the big ones today:

What's going on, am I just dumb. All my grain spawn is going well from the same transfers and SAB. All the previous cultures I've moved these from are fine. I am using reusable petri dishes - placing them wrapped in the oven for 2hrs and then pouring.

I think my agar tek is the problem, maybe my pouring Tek. Maybe I should just do no pour with the petris. I have a few no pour plates but they are super condensated and I'm giving them time to clear up

Clean your SAB soap warm water.

Sterilize your utensils,

Turn off the central air.

Scrub your arms and hands with dial or dawn... for a full minute or two...

Revise your Aseptic techniques.

Any idea what kind of contam this is? Smelled fine when I buried it outside, but looks identical to sectoring section of the identifying contam thread.

Ba ba ba bacteria baby!  Looks like the possibility of some mold too.  Yeet those into the sun and start over.  Either your plate work is off, your grain prep is off, or both.  Go back and assess your clean work to try and figure out what went wrong.

Oh yeah, I already buried that guy.

You could very well be right about the sterile techniques. But I’ve done a ton agar work cleaning up mss cultures and then doing a food bit (30ish) of transfers both a2g and g2g. Still think it’s something with the prep, or would you say I messed up during a transfer?

Granted you could be right (and probably are) on both accounts, just trying to figure out where to put my focus into.

Second jar started showing signs today, so I’m thinking I messed up doing the transfers. But to your point I’m going to pay close attention to my prep and transfer process on the next batch. Thanks for your input man, I appreciate it.

Bacterial pretty much always comes from a slip in technique. In grain i find it more common from a2g than the actual transfers
