Re: The Official Kratom Growers Thread. [Re: Acaterpillar]
    #28604485 -

I have two kratom plants I've had for many (7?) years that were gifted to me from someone here. I keep them in a greenhouse in the summer and move them inside under fluorescent lights during winter (Canada). These two plants are in the same growing space, and there is a draft occassionally when the door opens but that had never been an issue before. One of them dropped almost all of its leaves in November and I'm not sure what to do. I don't want to mess with it by fertilizing but I haven't fed them anything for a good while now (probably close to 2 years). All I can think of is to take cuttings of the healthy one but I don't have a good success rate with kratom cuttings.

Does anyone think this plant will bounce back? Is there anything I can do to help it?

Sad plant:

Happy plant:

Thanks in advance. Really don't want to lose them. Lost my salvia I had since 2006 during summer 2022 and I'm still sad about it. At least kratom is easier to get in Canada, but still.

How old is the potting soil?
Could try replanting into fresh soil or make a mini greenhouse by putting it in a sealed bag.

It's probably quite old. I think I got it in 2018 or 2019. Pro mix as a base, diluted with more perlite for drainage and enriched with some worm castings and then added some organic 4-4-4 to it. I would occasionally give them cal-mag and top feed them with 4-4-4 as well. Being winter, the rest of my promix is frozen under a deck but I could dig it out, I still have some worm castings (not frozen) and gaia green (I think is the brand) 4-4-4, and 15-0-0 (blood meal?).

I also have some fabric pots, I feel they're a lot better than the plastic ones but they're bigger and don't really have much space of this plant. I could try removing it from the pot, trimming the roots and getting it into fresh soil mix but I am afraid of the shock of doing that while it's already suffering.

What type it that? Bubblebee or another? My white vain kratom is doing pretty well and I love that 1 leaf give a very clean energy boost. Specifically choose this type for energy since I don't enjoy opioids.

Its green veined malaysian. It was a single clone i almost killed but it bounced back.

I dont wnjoy opioids. They exacerbate my anxiety. So i dont like them but kratom in the 2-4 gram dosage is like a nice cup of coffee

Nice green would be my second choice for kratom since profile also more toward energy rather than sedative. IDK how much a leaf weights probably 1-2 grams depending on the size.

Ive chewed rifay leaves but that gets old. Toss and wash is the way to go

I've had success microwaving in 30 second bursts between paper towels until dry and brittle and just chewing it... I automatically swallow it.  I have collected some leaves and dried so I'll be using Toss and wash for those I guess.

So i take it microwaves and heat doesnt destroy the mitragynine molecule

I mean it still works. I know high heat damages it but since the microwave mainly evaporates the moisture and doesn't 'cook' it might not damage it or atleast not much

Well i dried out my coco leaves in the air fryer at 65c. Seems to do a good job at drying them out faster

Nice mitragynas.
I have tried grow them but i live in a climate that is too cold so only option is indoors.
But the air is too dry here and with time every plant i had have died.
Sad, i had quite a lot of mitragyna plants and was growing from seed too.
It works indoors but you have to control the humidity if you live where its dry.

Nice to see your fine plants though.

Some recent cuts. Two RVT and one Rifat (or maybe Bumblebee, over the years I’ve mixed up the two… I believe it’s the Rifat though). Here’s a method I described briefly in the canna growers thread, about using fresh aloe Vera tubercles to utilize the slime inside. Essentially, I’ll break a tubercle off my aloe momma… then take a few rough cuts off of momma krat. I get a little jar with some RO (not ph leveled, right out the drip tube is fine) and take the rough cut/snapped end of the aloe (squishing it a little in my hands first to liberate some of the slime) and toss it into the water. Give it a good swirl. Not too much aloe goop, just a little piece is fine. Now, with a sharp and clean blade or razor, I’ll make my cuts along the bottom 1-2 nodes. Often slicing one node to the other, then cutting off the excess with the razor. Lastly I take the razor edge and cut little slits/lances along the area I just cut and some of the adjacent green skin. Spin the branch around and make a few more scrapes. You’re not trying to carve it up or anything, just nice clean lances. Nothing crazy, just a few is good. Then I’ll stick the cut end directly into the tubercle of the aloe and spin it around, trying to work some of the slime into the fresh cuts. I’ll leave the cuts in the tubercle until it’s time to pot up into the net pots. Then I move onto the next cut… sticking all of them into the tubercle like the first. Then I’ll poke a hole in my (prewetted) perlite in net pots (with a little drip saucer (plastic sauce/soufflé cups are what you want) pot underneath).  Finally, stick the cuts into each net pot. Then taking the cup of RO with aloe slime, give it a little swirl… then pour a slight amount along the stem to help position it into place and give everything a little more moisture. Then I’ll put into a sealed clear thingy-majingy and close it Up.

I’ll then put the dome off to the side of my T5… definitely don’t put them right under the light. That will work them to death and will cut back on successful rooting. Off to the side, only stray light. Then every day or whenever I can remember, I’ll pop it open and blow some fresh air into there with my mouth. Give a light spray if the walls of the dome are dry with no condensation. Definitely no need to go crazy with misting, as long as there’s some moisture in there, it’s usually fine. Kratom is more tolerant to excessive moisture than other stuff though. I don’t even check the net pots for a good two weeks. But typically from 2-4 weeks you’ll see something. Usually when the leaves start to yellow out of nowhere, this is a sign that SOMETIMES signifies a successful root, but other times its more mysterious with you needing to check the bottom of the net pots.

I hope some of this was helpful for someone new to cloning, especially working with Krat.
