I've made successfully made numerous ovoid patches with just spores -> PF cakes -> right to chip.  Very hands off with low effort. Not much worry about contams.  Very inexpensive.  Needs lots of patience and somewhere outside they can fruit at.  There is contams along the way in the cake and the chips if you colonize them inside, but it doesnt seem to matter when you go outside.  I only try and colonize inside during the winter.

If your end goal is just getting a patch going outside, i'd say don't overcomplicate it.  I get its a hobby though and you are kind of rolling the dice with genetics on multispore, but I havent had any non fruiting strains pop out.  I've even had some cool shit like near albinos sporeless ones show up that turn green.

Spores were free to like $25, well I had to find ovoids.  Pack of jars and PF stuff from the walmart store.  I got a big PC for like $50 a couple years ago.  Chips are kind of expensive if you use BBQ ones, but ovoids love them.







I have some new patches that should pop off first time this spring.

I took a 1.4g Azzy fruit yesterday. It wasn't super potent but it made me battle my demons full on. It was like my own mind was throwing poison darts at me, trying to fuck up my headspace. Took a while to calm down a bit, then contemplating life and death. A dance with the grim reaper, once again. Not that I mind it, it was still great and refreshing experience, but it would be nice to experience something light and uplifting for once. Haven't had such a trip in a long time now, not sure why.

Admittedly, I’m completely new to growing wood lovers, so my approach may not have been the most recommended methods. I have read differing opinions regarding the best techniques for wood prep, depending on whether you plan to grow outdoors, or attempt an indoor cultivation (which seems more challenging.) sterilizing the wood may have been overkill, but here’s how I went through it:

I didn’t do any fermentation with these jars. In a bucket, I poured a pot of boiling water over the mixed wood and let soak over night, then drained for 8 hours or so while I was at work. When I got home I loaded the drained, but hydrated wood into the quart jars and sterilized in my PC for 2 hrs along with a batch of grain jars.

Then treated the inoculation just like a grain-to-grain expansion: shook up a single colonized half-pint of WBS, and inside my SAB, split it as evenly as possible into both quarts while just eyeballing it.

I do have a few cubic yards of wood mulch left over from garden work, piled outside fully exposed to the weather, just aging in the rain and sun. Larger pieces (would still describe as chips), unknown hardwood species. When these two quarts are fully colonized, I plan to hydrate a couple buckets of this outdoor mulch the same way, but instead of sterilizing in the PC, I plan to do a long pasteurization of bags  in my crockpot-slow cooker, to do one last expansion from these jars, before spreading into untreated outdoor beds of the mulch.

O my.. sorry to hear that. I assume most have been in that dark abyss at least once. The light and uplifting I got for the first time on P. Subtropicalis.. not light though, but I found it good compared to what normally awaits me.

Yeah Egon, I'm in the same boat as you are ^^ totally new to woodlovers, but I am going a different way. I am now fermenting woodchips (3rd week started yesterday), my Azzy, cyan and ovoid are colonizing grain as we speak. Hope to put them to chips maybe in 2 Weeks or so. I won't sterilize them, just pack them in a bag with the grainspawn and let it colonize before putting them in spring outside and making guerilla patches in a small forrest just above my appartment^^

Very cool. I wish you always the best of success. Guerilla patches outdoors would be great to get started in my area, but I fear that without at least a little maintenance and care during the heat of the summer, they would not survive long.

In my particular climate along the gulf coast of the US, active wood lovers are not common, and I really wanted to give the myc a good strong headstart against competing micro-organisms, since my temperatures/rainfall/elevation are not the native conditions for these species. It seemed like sterilization at the first expansion, then pasteurization at the second, would help a healthy body of myc better survive the eventual expansion to the untreated outdoor beds.

I too have some Azures newly on grain, and an unknown woodlover species from New Zealand (possibly Subs or Ovoids). I hope to put them on wood in a week or two. And then grow out the same way as my cyans.

We’ll get to watch each other’s progress with new cultures!

Nice work Egon.  You can see a couple rice grains in my picture that look very similar to yours.  I think that is going jump to wood chips and work fine.

If you put it outside soon, put some chicken wire fence over top of it until well established.  Critters may still want to dig it up until the grain chunks are pretty much gone.

Boiling/water soak not only leaches out stuff from the wood.  It really softens it up which seems to help.

Did you get any interesting visuals from this? The couple of really intense ass-kicking trips I've had (only from cyans, I haven't tried azzies yet) were accompanied by some frankly terrifying fractal faces and, with one particular patch, some alternate dimension stuff that looked pretty similar to how I've heard some DMT visuals described. I'm interested in the relationship between these and the demon-facing trips as I feel like those intense visuals can coincide with the visceral fear that often accompanies the come-up.

IDK if this is helpful but I find that most of the time the trip gives me what I need. Sometimes I need the ass kicking. Sometimes I need to be less of a dick to myself. I'll second Mr. Piggy though, I haven't had a rough experience from ovoids. Visuals still but less mean. Some of the wood lovers are mean and they mean business.

Hopefully the demon facedown helped move you forward in some ways that you needed. Perhaps the next experience will balance that out. All this stuff does come from our brain after all. The mushrooms can fuck with our brain chemistry pretty hard but they can't insert ideas that weren't already there before in some capacity. At least as far as we know.

Haven't seen it mentioned here a lot (tbf it doesn't seem easily available in large quantities) but I've also found pecan to be a pretty cyan-friendly wood. Maybe a bit slower to colonize than alder but the mycelium always looks very healthy on it.

The trip definitely helped. Especially it helped consolidate the decision to take a break from growing actives (indoors).

The visuals weren't too overwhelming. They actually were pretty "drawn out" - like there was a lot of space between them. Exotics like Pans and Tamps usually fill the entire visual field with visuals, it seems saturated. But the visuals I did get were very cool. Could be much cooler in a better headspace tho.

Well, I've been enquiring into the work of Ian McGilchrist.. author of 'The matter with things' probably you will find something on youtube about him. I recognise many of the 'takes' on the world of the hemispheres and what goes wrong when there is a problem in one of them and in different areas .. some are absolutely frightening (and remind me of challenging trips).. does help a lot in understand psychedelics. In case you love to read..
