Nihilism and the elusive Objective Truth
    #2813177 -

So am I - nestled quite comfortably in a general scepticism towards anything regarded as 'objective', truth included - a nihilist? Of course I have my own, ever changing and developing, views on life, truth, ethics and 'meaning', but does this make me a nihilist?

OK, so as I understand it, nihilism is denial of objective codes, or any other strict codes. It is my belief that some form of existentialism is a logical progression from nihilsm (i.e. you 'leave it behind'), but surely to be a true existentialist you'd have to commit to some form of doctrine, whether it be of your own device or not. But I have a very weak relationship with my own doctrines: I question them, change them, develop  them continually due to my sceptical ideas about society and the individual (as in we are only judged against the 'norm' in our respective societies). I mean, I'm not suddenly going to go around killing, raping etc etc but that doesn't mean that I think they are objectively or automatically 'wrong'. Anyway, I diverge: In the long term I think I am quite sceptical ethically. In the short term I can live by doctrines or ideals passionately but does the general flakiness of my beliefs and the weak relationships I have with any 'code' by which one should lead their life mean that I am a nihilist? Given a better option I'd probably leave my ideals behind and reformulate new theories.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, I guess

Like you, I don't follow a well-articulated code, though I do think we both have some sort of value system from which we try not to stray. The two biggest rules I try to follow are 1) uphold your own personal responsibility and 2) don't step on other peoples' freedoms.

Though I'm not sure what your particular beef with your perception of "objectivity" is, I'd guess that you must've had a bad experience with an overzealous math/logic teacher. As far as your fleeting grip of various doctrines, I'd say your searching for something that isn't there. Absolute stability never comes in the end. The rate of change isn't even stable.
