Nihilism gets a bad rep
    #3922271 - 03/15/05 08:21 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

I dont think most people really understand nihilism. Usually, when the topic comes up, someone will state that it is the belief in nothing. It is so much more than that, and that isnt even an accurate portrayal. I used to have the same negative ideas attached to the word "Nihilism", until I came about it on my own.

with respect to the mind boggling size of all of existence, and the incomprehensible span of time, from beginning to end, personal existence seems pretty insignificant. Now, if you pair this thought process with some Hedonism, you can come to the conclusion that the whole point of existence is just to exist, perceive,do, feel etc.

Webster has a good definition of Nihilism: 1 a : a viewpoint that traditional values and beliefs are unfounded and that existence is senseless and useless b : a doctrine that denies any objective ground of truth and especially of moral truths.

Now, if someone was to take this to the fundamental level, it would be kind of creepy. I am not completely a nihilist, it is just one of the viewpoints I like to keep with me, like a spiritual humbling/ distraction when i get to wrapped up in what we call "life".

I wonder why you didn't get any response to this.

It was a good rant, hopefully some will look into it...

Think it gets such a bad rap due to being associated with some Gothic movements... Plus the Big Leboski didn't help much either. Oh yeah... and it's attempt to overthrow iconoclasms.

I think the reason nihilism gets a bad rep is because it presents a very pessimistic and negative point of view on life and existence.

People don't want to try to understand why life is actually insignificant and meaningless. That's just asking to be depressed. But of course that's not really the essence of nihilism, but it looks like on the surface.

And personally i prefer optimistic takes on life, you know, ideas that makes you want to go forward, ideas that encourage a positive attitude in everyday life, becuase if everything meaningless, then why the hell go on? why not just give up?

basically "nihilism" doesn't evoke "hope" in most people's mind, and usually hope is wha keeps most people alive.

actually I have to thank here to nihilism, because it did save my spiritual ass a few times in the past.

sometimes it's the only way you can cope with the atrocities this world is capable of producing. I won't defend nihilism, I won't proclaim it, I'm just thankful that it is a possible state of mind.

furthermore, after nihilistic states, life in splendorous hope always followed. it worked like spiritual maintenance and readjustment as I learned to cope with emotions and life.

exactly, it is like a tool to help use refocus our perspectives. I dont think it is pessemistic wholly, in fact it helped me be a happier person, shirking the burden of self importance and seriousness. nihilism is kind of a gateway to discordianism.

it can be taken negativly. but a lot of the first true realizations i ever had were nihilistic. such as nothing matters. Nothing really matters///in the end it all works out.

then you take the words and disect them and compare then with the everything and the nothing and the duality of it all is.

Nothing matters

nothing = everything

everything matters

but it doesnt at the same time.

:shrug: i dont know...makes sense to me.

Nihilism to me represents one of the most optimistic outlooks on life, because it does not even attempt to constrain anyone with anything!

If we are a tiny speck of insignificance, there's a hell of a lot of us, so we must all be insignificant together. It really is a way of uniting us all as one whole! Better than this, it ALLOWS us to have insignificant lives. If we are Christians we are constantly worried about God and damnation, if we are Marxists we are constantly worried about over throwing the Bourgeois, but if we are Nihilists well, erm, let me think. WE DON'T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING! It's a fantastic philosophy it is one most people abide by in everyday life and don't even know about it.

How often have you heard someone say "what I do doesn't matter at X" (be X home/work/etc)? That's a Nihilistic viewpoint, applied to everything its just "what I do, doesn't matter". In that case do what you want!

The real problem with Nihilism is that it needs to be tempered for Nihilists to survive in society. Taken to the extreme Nihilists could run off and kill people, maim animals, rape children, you get the idea, and all because "nothing really matters".

Remember Bohemian Rhapsody!

That's my puddle of salmon tea-leaves! :stoned::mushroom2:

Because that statement necessarily collapses into Nihilism!

If everything means everything, then everything also means nothing! It all has the same value, everything or nothing, if everything is equal it's Nihilism because it makes everything EQUALLY insignificant!

It's the differences in the values of things that make up our existence. Boss worth $500, pigeon worth $10. So which one would you rather kick, the Boss or the pigeon (this is money that's gonna be taken from you!). Some would say the Boss is worth $500, I'd just kick the damn pigeon! :rotfl:

That's my bong of inconsistencies! :stoned::mushroom2:
