Are these safe?

I had to leave for a few days, these are penis envy. They went too long, lots of spore drops? turned quite black, veils broken, caps folded up. Do not look like the others which were harvested in the first flush from this cake.

I would suspect the cake is done?

Spore drop on your sub is not ideal but it may go another flush. Are you sure they are PE? They look more like PE#6 or something.

Maybe?! But here's what the first flush looked like. Wasn't great either. Maybe PE6?

While I'm saving up for my PC I had a question:

66qt tub
4qt spawn
8qt sub with 2qt of the 8qt for casing

Was curious if 4qt is overkill given I'll only get 2-3 usuable flushes probably...

Would 3qt spawn and 6qt sub be good enough or do you guys think the extra 1qt spawn be necessary in such a large tub?

Thanks for your assistance?

4qt is sort of the minimum standard for a 66qt. You can go lower but it is in no way overkill, it's optimal. Many use 5/6+

So I have heard that when growing APE you should add a thin casement layer to the top of the mycelium once the shoebox is fully colonized.  Is that the case? And is there anything else that differs from a standard cube grow?

Yes, casing APE is beneficial. They’ll grow up through the casing. I case with CV, others use peat.

The only thing I’d mention that differs from other cubes is the time. APEs take a bit longer. They can be much slower, so don’t worry if they take an extra couple of weeks.

That is the case. *PE also tends to move a bit slower and is prone to blobbing. Here's a good rundown on casing PE: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/27426583#27426583

Temps are around 73-76 depending on the time of day. I'll give them a good shake and see what happens.

Jar Shaking? [Re: Hesus Ricardo]
    #27957210 -

Both my Columbia gold WBS spawns are about 40 to 50% I am trying to shake the jars to speed up the final 50 %.  However, regardless of how hard I shake these jars, the mycilium clump will not break apart. Any suggestions on what I should do?

Thanks

I've got all 24 PK jars noc'd up now. I still need to run the AC 24/7 to keep temps down in the comfy zone. Is there any reason not to leave the jars in the SAB while colonizing to keep them out of the breeze created by the AC? Or is the air current not a thing to be concerned with?

Muchas gracias

Yes, grain agar is good for getting your cultures accustomed to grain substrates. If you will be growing on rye berries, you can use rye flour. If using WBS, make WBS flour, etc.

I'd use ME with some grains added as an adjunct.

Having a second flush, is there a "fertilizer" I can add to promote bigger or more mushrooms? [Re: milkboy]
    #27957858 -

I had thought my "cake" in the tub was done. It had one flush, I then put it in the garage where I guess the cold "reactivated" a second flush. I was wondering if I could add some fertilizer or nutrients to it to better yeilds.

Impossible to break up clumps could be a sign of bacterial infection

Nah, once it’s spawned it’s got its nutrients. Water is all they need after that.
