itskater, be prepared to waste your money.

As Grind365 already said, you should absolutely not put spore solution to grains. These vendors will sell these products side by side and claim their grains are suitable for spore syringes.

Spore syringes are not sterile in the slightest. Spore prints are taken from mushrooms grown in open air, and they carry rogue mold spores and bacteria. When these are added to water in a syringe, they multiply in that water.

When you put this dirty spore solution to grains, their complex nutrient profiles provide everything the contamination needs to thrive very quickly.

Spore solution should only be used with brown rice flour (PF tek) - this mixture is much more resistant to contamination.

If you wish to use grains you must clean your spores on a nutritional gel media in Petri dishes (agar). The 2D surface easily allows identification of contamination vs healthy mycelium which can be transferred to new dishes. Once you have a clean culture then you can transfer to grain, make liquid culture, more clean Petri dishes - the possibilities are endless.

If you wish to proceed with spore to grain, you will just find out the hard way, as many have, but we are trying to save you from going through that.

Any amount of spore solution to grain is not recommended, but by using a full syringe in one bag, you are going to have a huge plethora of contamination. At least you'll get to see some pretty colours hey. The idea is that if you are REALLY going to go spore to grain, you use the tiniest amount possible, so that contamination is not so rife that the bag just cannot be saved. With a small amount of solution, you MIGHT, just might, end up with a bacterial bag that can produce some fruits via top fruiting directly from the bag. But it's not smart to take the chance, especially provided that all of the info you need to succeed is half in this post, but right here on this forum.

Dumb question: why are plins worth transferring? I have a plate poppin off. I’m going to do transfers. Just wondering why I’m doing it.

Theory is that the plate is clean, so the pin(s) are clean. Big potential for reduced contams...maybe even reduced to zero for a clean start. Plus fruiting in a plate indicates that it's a strain that wants to fruit. :super:

Thanks, awesome. Makes sense. I’ve got a clone culture exploding with pins. Gonna grab the biggest one tomorrow.

How many isolation's plates after the MS plate did you have to go to get a pin?

Zero. MS and swab plates can pin just fine. Heres some pins growing right off the swab.

What's more important to spend on?

Spores - $25 -$50 (should have got a bundle pack earlier )

All in One Bags - $20 - $35

Spawn Bags - $25

I currently have a $25 (w/ shipping) Spore Syringe (Golden Teachers) that I was going use with 3.5 LB bag of sterilized whole oats I got for $25

I just purchased a 4.5LB All in One bag that I'm excited to try that claims to use an exotic blend including Ostrich, Horse, Cow, Camel, & Buffalo field aged manure, and recently incorporating Worm Castings & Coffee into the blend.

Now I'm left with what spores to buy for the bag. Should I go with some more Golden Teachers from premiumSpores.com or get something with a higher price tag?

What spores do you recommend? Most likely from premiumspores.com

I'd save my money and invest in a pressure cooker.

You shouldn't put spore solution straight to grain but if you were going to one syringe would be enough to do 10+ bags.

You should start with agar if you are going to do grain.

10+ bags off of a 10cc syringe?
So that should be plenty to use on a 4.5LB all in one and a 3.5LB spawn bag.

Would you recommend splitting the syringe or buying another?
I just always read 10cc for a 3 - 5LB bag.

The spawn bag I am going to let sit a lot longer than the all in one bag.

I cannot in any good conscience suggest any of this as a course of action. You are likely to not get any mushrooms at all after spending a bunch of money on gimmicks. I understand wanting to hit the floor running but what you are doing is jumping off a fourth story roof into the water full of sharks.

You would do way better with your $ by doing PF tek cakes. There is a lot of good info out there and they are just about the easiest thing to pull off for beginners with a budget who want to actually be successful. PF cakes can be just as productive as any other method. The use of spore syringes was born from PF tek. They are really only good for PF tek and every other use for them has shown massive and very regular failure.

Using premade materials is a massive crapshoot and you are really putting a lot of trust into people you don't know who very likely will never give you a refund. I have seen this over and over and over again.

You can pull off PF tek with basic kitchen gear and grow a good amount of mushrooms that way.

Otherwise get a PC (pressure cooker) and look into working with agar. That is what all the successful people who have regular and almost predictable results do.

itskater, you can check my first grow log and my 2nd grow log for a striking data point in favor of Guerilla, with whom I agree fully. I inoculated 3 all in one bags and one rye grain spawn bag via spore syringe. I used 3ML per bag. All 3 all in ones were bacterial, they took months to colonize and they never fully colonized. The grain spawn never even did anything at all. I did get some fruits out of it, but nothing like it should have been. The second time, I did PF tek with the same spore syringes. It's working amazingly. I wish I'd have saved those nice bags because now, quite quickly I might add, have learned how to make Liquid Cultures and work with agar. Those bags would have provided a bounty with what I know now. You're free to do whatever you want and it might even work, but the chances are slim and I want you to honestly know that. This is my legit experience, not some elitist crap.

I'm thinking to start using 12qts shoeboxes with 2 mycoquarts instead of 6qts shoeboxes with 1 mycoquart... do you think that would be pretty much the same? The reason is that I'd very much prefer to harvest just 1 single box instead of 2, specially when you're dealing with MS and 1 gets ready to harvest days before the other one, so it can't be done together.

I have 4 boxes and 7 quart WSB spawns.

2: Z strain
2: Koh Sumai
2: Columbia gold
1: Thai Lipa Yai

I guess I could just short the 1 box on the Thai Lipa and have an experiment on what less grain spawn does.

I will mix these probable at a 2-1 ratio  substrait to spawn.  My boxes are 8in by 12in by 3 inch tall.

The Tai I would probaly have a higher ratio if I keep 4 seperate boxes.

Thanks

Those are all the same mushroom, Psilocybe cubensis. It's no different than mixing a bunch of jars started from the same spore syringe

If you want to fruit them in the same tub that will be totally fine, but you'll want to keep the substrates separate by using trays of some sort or large bags instead of trays. If you mix them or have them side by side in the same substrate they potentially will become very competitive with each other or fractalize in a breeding orgy which throws out all sorts of random phenotypes and confusion.

Two smaller size sterilite dish tubs fit perfectly in the bottom of a 66qt purple handle tub. Each dish tub fits 2 myco quarts of spawn + substrate perfectly.

I'm trying to keep the whole thing a secret so agar process seems to be a little difficult.

PF tek is your best bet for going spores to food. I have a friend doing a very discreet grow with PF jars, and she’s been very happy with the output
