I understand that many growers run inline exhaust fans and fans to circulate air and fog.  That being said, how do you all recommend to best control temps to get fruiting conditions into the 60-70 F range?

My assumption was to just control the temperature in the space where the grow tent sits via an AC unit.  That way, the intake would pull in air that's already cool enough.  Are there other ways, like hooking up a portable unit to pump cool/warm air in directly?

Thank you all for your help!

TL;DR How do you control temps in a grow tent for gourmet mushrooms??

Quick question:

I am pouring agar into sterile 2oz plastic cups in a homemade 106qt Sterilite SAB. What is the best technique to use while pouring as it compares to petris?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes, controlling temps in the room where the tent sits is the best way. I like growing at 78F - the things I grow like it - even cubes, though I mostly grow pans, mexicana, etc. 78F is easy because most people keep their house at around that temp or lower via A/C, and if you keep it even lower than that, you can use a small heater in your grow area to bring temps up a bit. That same heater works great in the winter to get your room into the mid 70's when the rest of your house is in the high 60's etc.

Your other option is to skip the tent and instead us a JCM fruiting chamber. Basically just a large tote with a few inches of water in the bottom, to which you add an aquarium heater set to whatever temp you want your air in the tote to be (say 78F etc), and some air stones attached to an air pump sitting outside the tote. Put a wire dish rack in the tub to give you a floor surface that's up out of the water and set your trays on that, then put the lid on. High humidity and good temp control this way. Down side is not as much space as a tent.

No difference really. Pour is pour. I'm not a fan of pour agar in SABs. Bit of a pain and more risky than a flow hood since any contaminates on your hands or bottle will be falling downward toward you plates. Don't get me wrong, you can do it, it will work, but I prefer no-pours if using SAB and save pours for the flow hood. If in a SAB just try to pour into the very edge of the receiving container to keep as little above the receiving container as possible to reduce contamination risk.

Hey guys,

These 2 jars are bacterial but they don't look so bad to me (the condensation in the right one was there since I took it out the PC, it's not from bacteria heat)

My plan is just to top fruit straight in the jars to take prints. Do you all think they would recover from a shake or should I not try my luck?

Thanks

I think if it's too bacterial to recover from the final shake, then it's gonna be too bacterial to produce from a top fruit anyway. Might as well shake and see how bad it really is. From what I can see, I don't think the chances of recovering are too bad.

I had better luck with cups when I used a elevated wire rack in my sab.  Make double sure to not put any part of your hand/glove over the plate.  I put the top back on the agar container after each 3 or 4 plate pour just in case air starts swirling.

Cups and lids on the left, agar container on the right is how I set mine up. I keep the container with the cups pointing downward in their sanitized original container during the session until they are about to be poured. Then it's a left hand right hand situation to place cups down the middle and pour 3-4 at a time. Place lid on agar container and place all 3-4 tops on then I come back and snap them in place.
Making sure to not place any part of your hand over an open agar cup.

I stack them 7 high and I leave them like that in the sab until cool. Usually takes about 30 minutes.

I also got an awesome little point and shoot laser thermometer so I can start pouring at 125ยฐ. I think it was only 15 or 20 bucks off amazon. It really helps cut down on condensation.

I usually get 40 plates the same size as yours per 500ml of liquid.

Okay.  What is a good option if I want to cool the tent?  Is there any way to chill the water in the fogger?

What is the best way / technic to dry sclortia?

Also when spawning shoeboxes is it better to cover the shoebox in foil and poke holes or just use the lid. I've seen it done both ways and wanted to know if it made a difference or if it was just preference.

Thanks

Good Day my fellow dudes and dudettes,
compare to everyone else im new in this hobby and thats why im asking a lot of stuff.
Thank you to the people that encourage to ask as much as possible.

I have 2 jars, and im thinking they are contaminated.

The First one:

Reason: A lot of "Water" inside the jar

The Second:

maybe its the angle but there are no dark spots, im just wondering why its not colonized at the top.

Anyone can help me to identify more than i can ?

I wouldn't diagnose those as bacterial. I have a high standard though for only calling actual bacteria bacteria, and I have and use a microscope daily. I see no slime, or pooling or anything I'd call bacteria. I do see overly wet grain and burst grains which can slow and alter growth patterns due to the moisture and the starches converted to sugars which now cover all the grains. Naked eye evaluation of microorganisms is pretty weak in general unless it's green or obvious. Mycelium can look a lot of different ways.

Personally I'd shake them. They'll likely be fine.

Did that grain ferment a bit before it went in the pc? A lot of the time the leftover enzymes and metabolites from bacteria and other microbes before pc can be mycotoxic after the pc causing slow, weird, or no growth at all. Looks like a bacterial problem without the bacteria when that happens.

"Bacterial" is one of the main go to old wives tales to explain what is not understood by the cultivator/community yet. It's just one of those things that gets repeated.

(Please feel free to share any bacteria cultures with me that exhibit swarm motility, especially in extreme environments.)
