That's about 1g of carbs to 1mL of Karo. So if you wanted a 1% LC, add 1mL of Karo to 99mL of water.

That said, Karo doesn't make the best LC but it'll work in a pinch.

Tub liner or no tub luner

Hello everybody this is my first post I'm still trying to figure it out and I'm not using my glasses 🤣
I'm starting a second Tub, and I noticed some people have liners and others do not use them... What is the difference and why would I use a liner if I can avoid it?

As a beginner your surface conditions might not always be optimal. When the surface is sub-optimal, usually mushrooms favour the microclimate around the edges of the substrate, between the wall of the tub and the sub, and thus you may get side pins. Adding a liner acts as a block, and when applied properly will shrink against your substrate as that shrinks, keeping side pins to a minimum. It helps with cleanup of tubs too.

I don't use liners personally, I just properly compact my substrate and have correct field capacity and surface conditions.

Cool thanks for the quick answer, it makes sense. I'll try one tub without liner later on after I've practiced. Just now getting pins off of my first tub, that actually doesnt have a liner but instead, has a foil tray. Thats the kit I was sold.

Anyone have a recommendation for how many holes is should put in a modified shoebox?

I'm thinking one 1/4in hole on each of the short sides and 2 on the long sides... they'll have 2 layers of micropore and the lid gap will be sealed.

i usually just keep the lid on until fully or almost colonized and put a bag w holes over it or into a larger modified tote to fruit :shrug:

My 66qt tubs have (6) 2" holes with one layer of mp tape. Maybe there's a relative math that could be done for smaller qt tubs?

Can I ask why you want to modify a shoebox? I’m an idiot and even I can make a shoebox run unmodded. Plastic bag over the top and forget it.

I keep having issues with gnats popping up, so I've been using bags.. I want to try a batch of modded tubs with Micropore over the holes and the lid sealed with painters tape... once the flush comes in, I'll dub tub and seal the gap with tape.

It's already starting to cool off, so it's just a temporary fix.. if it works, I'll probably just run molded tubs next summer :shrug:

Thanks Rum. If my math is right... that would mean I need 1.09in... so 6- 1/4 inch holes should work since I'm thinking 2 layers of MP.. I can always remove a layer if it looks like it needs air
