Could you share a link of the type of pipe cutter you mean? I'm struggling to find one in my location that will fit the size of a cling wrap roll

Sure! I have a 1 1/4 inch diameter pipe cutter and it is just barely big enough for a standard roll. I would recommend something like this 1 1/5 inch model or larger. The link is Amazon, but you should be able to find one at your local hardware store and probably wal-mart too, but your choices will be more limited. If you're searching elsewhere online, just search for "pvc pipe cutter"

Here's a video of a slightly more expensive model($25) in action.

I’ll keep that in mind. I only have ten plates so perhaps it’s time to expand that quantity.

$110 with shipping for 500 plates:
https://www.southernlabware.com/petri-dish-polystyrene-90-x-15mm-sterile-500-cs.html

Says 100 mm, but they're 90 mm, but good. Come in bags of ten.

Ty I was gonna look for that link you shared with me before hahaah

I haven't tried it but I bet you can cut shrink wrap rolls with a long sharp serrated knife, like maybe a good bread knife. Or a hack saw. Those are good things to have, too.

Or a hot knife, haha. But I'd do that outside with a mask on.

I recently switched from LME to grain soak water agar and I’ve been getting these strange colors showing up in my plates. The strange color almost seems to be under the agar.

I’ve ran these same cultures side by side with LME plates with no sign of contamination or anything unusual in their LME counterparts.

I’ve also stored some of these same GSW plates at room temperature for 2-3 weeks and not seen anything unusual until I transferred the mycelium into them

I’ve been using LME plates for years and I hardly ever get contamination when doing transfers. When I have seen contamination on plates it’s usually just a random satellite colony of mold mycelium. I started messing around with GSW agar a few weeks ago and I noticed several of my cultures instantly switch from tomentose to rhizomorphic growth. The mycelium seems happy but that strange color looks awful. Every one of my cultures has showed this growth pattern on the GSW including several cubensis, ovoids, and azurescens

Hoping to get a quick answer that this is normal with GSW even though I’ve never seen anything like this

The brown growth is similar to the type of growth that is commonly seen on stone producers plates.

What is your process for creating GSW agar?

To the best of my knowledge, you need to cook grain water agar for longer than LMEA.
You'll want to use grain soak water within ~24 hours.

Munchauzen, I think, stores his GSW as ice cubes.

I have an extremely sharp chef knife. It cuts through meat and vegetables like butter.  But even with that,  I struggled to get through the roll. You have to cut around and then through. P9 makes it look easy in that video he made. It's not, and like I said, leaves ragged edges that the film gets stuck on,  which tears it when you're trying to wrap. Any saw would make this worse.  You want a nice clean cut.  The pipe cutter is, as I said before a far easier and SAFER way to cut through rolls of cling wrap.  I'll bet money.... anyone that tries cutting one of those rolls with a knife will be looking for an easier, safer way. Anyway.... that's all I'm going to push this.  Feel free to do as you like.

Can confirm. Tried cutting my cling film and it was a fucking bitch. Took me over five minutes and then I busted out the hack saw just today. Made a mess.

I just grab these pre cut rolls with a handle from the dollar store.. they're over with the office supplies and craft stuff.

For the parafilm users, what are you doing to cut it? Are the dispensers any good? They seem super expensive and have no reviews, or the cheap ones have terrible reviews. I love parafilm, but I’d love it more if it were easier to cut a 1”x4” piece off the roll.

I just use scissors.  When i'm doing plate work i cut a length off the roll and cut it down into the size strips i want. So then i just have a lil pile of pre cut strips sitting next to me. And i just grab and use strips as i need them. If i end up needing more then i grab more. If i have some pre cuts left over then i use them next time i need them.

Hey all I've been looking for anything on how mycelium should grow on agar and what to look for for the best healthiest agar.  Thanks

Playing with some different media: MEA-DCP (Dicalcium phosphate), Regular MEA and CWA (Coconut water agar)

Also been playing with millet flour, my cultures are loving it. It is thick, but I don't give a shit about the most "clear" plate - just if my cultures like it.

500ml h2O - 10g Malt - 10g Millet flour - Agar (at whatever you like, pictured plates were at 10g's, I've gone as little as 4g).

We all generally tend to go for rhizomorphic growth because it's easier to identify anything hiding in the agar but tormentose is also okay.

Organized growth is favorable and mostly what you are after.

Rhizomorphic

Tormentose

That's a basic idea

Great thread on how shroom growing should and shouldn't look, at every step.

Anyone know what happened to Tmethyl, anyway? Hasn't been here in a year and 9 months. T is cool.
