Alcabenzi [first] germ plate:

Groovy germ plates, SB.

Though is that penicillin...the round spot on the left of the third pic (Alcabenzi [first] germ plate)? Damn condensation, can't tell. The right side of the long swab blob should be great to transfer though.

Does anyone grow Penicillium intentionally here? Wouldn't be bad to have for the zombie apocalypse, if it could be extracted. I've thought about it.

thanks and yep, nketar61, that is mos def contam, pretty sure Penicillium. if i can safely open the plate i was thinking to tranfer from the area you mentioned.

what say?

There are people here who'd transfer away from it but I might not.

I'm no expert, but I'm more wary of molds (like Penicilliums) over bacteria....I've heard molds are more likely to spread around the room (via spores) if you open them. If you have another Alcabenzi plate without that, I'd use it instead. Or if you can grow another quick.

If not, if you open it, maybe spray some lysol around the room before and after, and use more ISO?

I would certainly wear a mask to open it, but I wear a mask when doing plates no matter what. (simple cloth mask).

What if you opened it at an angle and sprayed ISO (or h2o2) on the mold, held plate at an angle so you don't get it on the shrooms, then cut a bit of the shrooms out opposite over on the right and transfer that. Wonder if that would keep mold spores down, or not?

All opinion. Maybe someone else knows better.

I dont think there's any need to spray the room with anything or use extra ISO inside the SAB. If that were the only plate I had to work with then I would approach everything the same way, except I would do that plates transfers last - after all other SAB work had been done and sealed up.

My biggest concern is that it's already sporulating and would have dropped spores onto the mycelium making it more difficult to clean up.

Thank you.

Do it last. I didn't think of that, but yes.

Green means it's sporulating, right?

To the best of my knowledge, yes, when it's green it's sporulating. I do agree with you though that if there are other plates of that variety to focus on them instead of risking further mold contamination and that bacteria is much easier to deal with. I didn't mean to come off as argumentative with my reply if I did, I was mostly agreeing with you I just had a couple things I wanted to add.

When I get a swab I always rub it on 3 or 4 plates before I stab it in the last plate like he did. That way there are more choices if one goes green (or yellow, or red, or black, or clear and slimey).

If he doesn't want to risk it and that's the only one, I do see a lot of Alcabenzi floating around.

Alcabenzi = Alabama + Mexican, right?

Psilocybe subaeruginascens MS plate. I was surprised by how quickly these spores germinated. I'd hopefully like to introduce this species to the surrounding area as we don't have any naturally occurring woodloving Psilocybes.

Does peptone help? I searched and see some people on here use it, but that it used to be used more here.

I just remember in college using it in agar to grow bacteria. haha. But does it help shroom mycelium without helping grow bacteria?

Quick search shows someone else wondering the same thing here; https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/27465895#27465895

I don't know anything about it, just curious.
