So I got some ketchup cups to try out.


But…..so small. For some reason they never seemed too small until I actually had them :lol:

We’ll see. They’ll definitely be good for knocking up jars or bags. I’ll prob end up keeping a master plate and just putting a needle poke into the cups to make spawn.

I like the condiment cups. I pour the agar in real hot then set the lid on til it cools. Then once cool, snap the lids down.        ( about 20-30 minutes)The cups like to just squish if you try to put the lids on while they’re real hot.

I want to get a tortoise! My bad, off topic. They are awesome creatures though!

Holy shit do you pour with an oven mitt on? Seems unnecessary? Idk where I would put all those cups if I couldnt stack them right away.

Finally used up all the potato flakes I bought 6 months ago for agar. Decided to join the cool kids and ordered some LME and these snazzy media bottles

I actually do have a big snow glove in my lab area for times when the agar bottle isn’t quite cooled enough but I don’t have another 10-15 mins.


When it’s hot you seem to get a lot of air bubbles in the plates though.

You get air bubbles when it's hot because it's more viscous and sloshes more. Now I try to not slosh/mix the bottle after PC to keep bubbles close to nonexistent.

Also try to pour in one spot instead of moving the stream around.


I'm trying PDA again. It's always sucked major ass when I tried it before. Really tried to get super accurate with the measurements this time.

2g flakes,
10g agar
10g dextrose
1g Yeast
500ml Water

Yea I've seen flake recipes all over the place but found a reliable source that says 4g of potato flake is equivalent to the 200g potato water shindig used for 1L of agar. So went with 2 for half that.

I got into slants about 6 months ago and I can't stop, please send help.

A couple more were added since, a regular ol oyster and enoki cloned from a grocery store mushroom to join the king oyster, a couple of F1 cube(spores from Alabama 2020) clones, got 4 Ps ovoideocystidiata cultures almost ready for the fridge, as well as two more F1 clones..... and I got a Penicillium roqueforti culture that I scooped from a chunk of blue chesse as well as an Aspergillus (at least I believe, someone will scope it out for me soon)

15ml centrifuge tubes. IMO its the perfect size, smaller is too difficult to work with and bigger just takes up room for no reason.

I don't know how you can do anything in that tiny tube man. I tried using small tubes like that at first and couldn't figure out just how the heck you get anything off when you want to use it. 50cc flat bottom centrifuge tubes are really good IMO.

I use an inoculation loop to snag bits of myc, haven't had issues.
