Would the citric acid in food coloring cause problems with agar?
    #29674614 -

It’d obviously be a very small amount….
But just wanted to see if citric acid causes any issues with mycelium growing.

Citric acid will lower the ph.  Too much and your agar won’t set up (doesn’t take much) but i doubt a drop or two in your coloring has enough to cause that problem, but it’s something to keep in mind if you find that’s what’s happening.

If you do have the problem and absolutely want to use the coloring, if you add the coloring via a syringe filter when the agar is in the 120F range, you can avoid the issue of it not setting properly

Some food coloring also use anti-fungal preservatives

I think it’s the red dye that has anti fungal properties.

I used blue food coloring in my first few batches of agar, but it turns out mycelium eats the blue stuff eventually anyway so I stopped. I use molasses as my sugar source which lends a nice caramel color to the finished plates.

It's E211 and E202. I had to dig deep into my DMs to find it.

Both can be present in any color. It's brand specific AFAIK

Good to know, thanks for that.

Mushroom myc digesting the color is actually kind of a good thing imo, if you have a fully colonized plate and there's spots of color still it's probably areas of mold, or on a streak plate thats grown out a bit you can tell what's good vs bad myc by the color of the agar underneath

No common molds or bacterias actually consume the food coloring or absorb the water?

My blue plates have gone beige with myc. Like you said, its reassuring.

I can attest to that, the agar in these jars used to be blue

That's my understanding at least, I've let plates that contaminated mold sit around for weeks before cleaning them out and the areas with mold are always still colored and the areas with cube myc are colorless. I'm sure there's probably exceptions.
