I use grafting tape too… basically its 1” parafilm on a roll. Not technically sterile but I’ve never had an issue with contams from it, and its cheaper than normal parafilm.

Just to put it out there again since I’ve never seen it mentioned, parafilm will not work more than maybe a week in dry areas. Obviously not many people live in an extreme spot like that but I was amazed how quickly it deteriorated the one time I had some plates wrapped in it.

I couldn’t figure out why they had all gone bad suddenly and then noticed the tape had dehydrated and started cracking all over.




Nice job on the lib clone, are you gonna try and run it? They’re supposed to be super tough to fruit.

You have to pre-stretch it. If you stretch it first to the max and then put it on the item it will NOT tear, ever. Not sure what happens exaclt but that is all it is.

I have found that the plant grafting tape that D3 uses holds up to contams and drying in the US desert south-west. It just takes a bit of practice to find the exact right amount of stretching to stick but not break. I have lots of months old plates grown out for pins that do not contaminate.  I have not tried actual parafilm, though.

I have used cling wrap and it was probably just about as easy, effective and cheaper. As long as you get a nice cut of the roll. I would get frustrated when it would snag and tear because of sloppy cuts.

When I run out of grafting tape, I will probably try going back to cling wrap again. But one box has lasted quite a while.

Anyone have any thoughts or experience using the "Press n Seal" textured wrap versus the stretch to seal wrap? I picked up a couple of roll but have not tried those yet.

I live in an area that is super dry and never had parafilm dry out. Going on same roll for 5 years. I keep it in my basement which is a bit more humid but were taking 30% humidity after a rain and back down to 20% in hours.

Is parafilm even sterile?

I accidentally bought press and seal stuff recently. It seemed to work ok but it didn’t stretch like cling does so I wasn’t into it.

I also stopped using parafilm for the same reason, now I use grafting tape like many others here it seems :biggrin:

I will try to grow it indoors eventually but I'm gonna bury spawn all around my garden to make it really pop next autumn first :mushroom2:

I bought a roll of Parafilm and it's probably enough to last me a lifetime. That being said, there doesn't appear to be any expiation date on the roll. Maybe it's time to look it up to see if it can dry out.
As for being sterile, no I don't see how it can be as one side isn't covered and the covering on the other isn't very tight on the product.

Nothing against cling but I love parafilm and I use it for a LOT of different things not just myco stuff. There are no bad tools. It is good to have a wide variety of skills and tools at your disposal and limiting yourself is just that, limiting.
