Okay Kiwi cultivators. . .

I wanted a place to conspire to commit mass propagation of NZ woodlovers. . .

I will attempt to keep the original post updated with links to successful grows and teks.

Hey Bobbit

I’m a novice when it comes to cultivating but have a good eye for the hunt. I’d definitely be keen to spread the love so to speak during the upcoming season to preserve things for future generations.

Will keep an eye out here for tips.

okay heres my journey of frustration and fruition over the last 8 months.

after taking a whole bunch of spore prints from some subs last season I quickly set about trying to get some good agar plates going, Luckily I had occasional use of a labgrade flow hood at the start.
I tried making my own agar dishes but they all developed bacteria pretty quick so I switched to using WLNA plates as my friends with the hood happened to have been sent about 50 too many that month (o noes, how terrible)

inoculation was quick and dirty, I tore off the print, wrapped the foil around my finger and held it up - meanwhile having a stack of plates upside down I take the dish and wipe the print directly onto the agar, put it back into its lid and pick up the next - I used 3 full prints to noc all 50 of those plates, sealed with parafilm then sit back and wait.

about 20 of those developed some pretty funky contams within a week so chucked them out and on the whole had some pretty solid initial growth on the remaining 30.
I leave town for a couple weeks and come back to only another two going bad and a whole stack of these babies.

nice and healthy - ready to take to chips I hope.

I had previously bought a couple bags of these after seeing Olives success with being able to track myc growth on red chips and had had one bag soaking in water for 2-3 weeks - these are what I use for the remainder of the process.

So I go about chopping up all 30 of my agar dishes into 1cm squares and layering them amongst the red stuff in 15 or so of these food containers and another 15 or so jars of varying sizes.

tubs had about 3 layers and the jars 4-5

so after the first 10-14 days its going great - most myc chunks are jumping to the surrounding chip with healthy looking tendrils on almost all jars and containers

now is about end of july and I fuck off to south island for a month of winter mountain fun hoping to come back to a shitload of fully colonised chip ready to be moxed 1:1 into large tubs - I leave everything in a tub with a heat mat under it set to 20 degrees C and instructions to my housemate to keep them moist.

guess whats happened when I come back?
Jack. fuckin. shit.
no growth, if anything those nice frosty white patches have receded in places while a few longer tendrils have spread, all the agar pieces have gone nasty and mushy but not wanting to be hasty I leave them to it and noc up another 20 or so plates as backup.

after another 2-3 weeks theres zero improvement and I keep having to chuck out whole containers/jars due to explosive grey cobweb style mould taking over.
So im down to about 1/3rd of my inital lot and I conclude that maybe the red stuff isnt very available as a food source? so I consolidate them together into a few slightly larger containers with a bunch of sawdust/potting mix and another plate or two of fresh agar chunks from the latest batch of plates.

no dice. 2 weeks later I dig through and cant find a single myc tendril and sooner or later those get loads of grey mould as well.
So feeling pretty shitty right about now - somehow I managed to fuck up over 50 full plates of agar with no colonised chip to show for it when Ive seen countless people on here literally chucking stuff into buckets and getting results.

Time to do stuff properly - the filter patch bags I had ordered finally arrive from china along with a pressure cooker.

down to my last 2 plates of clean myc (no more WLNA available from lab supply) its time to do this LC thing,
which also goes disatrously as I do 8 jars with tiny agar wedges and they all go bad of course by this time the plate I had opened to do it is sporting some multicloured contams...

one last shot and after reading a bunch on here I find 'The Poke' method, much less chance of contams and especially if using a sterile out the packet syringe, sounds good.
I prep another 8 jars of LC and take it all to the flow hood for extra security.

now the tense waiting game.. no more clean myc plates its all waiting on these guys.
give it 10 days im thinking to prep some more LC then I realise I made absolute rookie error and made the previous poke batch with 0.4% honey instead of 4%... hadnt checked on em in a while and sure enough no growth at all...except one.
ONE tiny fluffy pompom of myc about 2mm across in the bottom of one jar, thriving in barely any nutrients and im goddamn ecstatic!
(the other jars didnt take at all btw)

clean LC will very quickly turn into a LOT of clean LC and after a week more the jar is half full of super nice healthy myc and I make a bunch more jars small and big using 0.8% honey before long im absoultey swimming in it.

(around this time I also got around to making a glove box and learnt that 21guage needles get clogged - use 18G)

below is one of about 8 fullsize bulk jars although for general and innoculating use I have 15 small 80ml ones.

Part 2: winning.

now the real fun can begin,
I initially plan to just make a buttload of LC and dash full jars of it onto chip/mulch/sawdust mix so I sterilise a few containters worth as well as using raw soaked chip (all my red chip has been soaking for a couple months by this point as a pre-ferment/aging process) but see nothing now after a month except a few tiny 1mm spots of weak myc which is in line with what ive now read other people have had happen.

head down to the brew shop and buy 5kg of rye grain, start soaking and prepping grain jars which takes a while to get the hang of (exactly how much to let them dry after a 10min boil after a 12 hour soak im still figuring out)

having not worked with LC before I have been kicking myself for not going straight in with it Im hoping to get fruits from a bed this June/july and all the fucking about with the failed chip had put me a good 4 months behind schedule.
5ml is enough to get thick myc on grain in 10 days, however I have been having an issue with them not fully colonising again after a shake, perhaps my 2 layers of micropore tape over the nail hole in the lid is letting the grain dry out a bit too much.

have to chuck some jars due to too much moisuture/contams but end up with a fair few like this

2 weeks before shake, this is 2 weeks after.

time to prep some bags!

I use the old woodchip/sawdust/potting mix that failed early on and fill up 4 bags with some plain soaked chip as well and a bit water (all rough guesswork) sterilised on 90mins 15psi

I then use a full jar of grain in each one in the glove box and BANG its all systems go - got this kinda growth from each grain about 4 days after mixing.

a week later

Now in the meantime I got a free 3mcube of generic mulch from a local tree surgeon with the hope of using it to bulk out the store bought red chip - having established that grain takes to the red stuff just fine I sterlised a couple bags of pure mulch (with a handful of sawdust) and chucked 200ml grain in

mulch:

1st week

3rd week (same bag)

after that I start sterlising bags with a mix of 12hr soaked mulch, 2 month soaked red chip, sawdust/potting mix and theyre going from inoculation with 500ml grain to fully colonised in the space of 12 days.

the difference between these results im getting now and how I was struggling to get tiny patches of myc to take hold initially is astronomical.
so for anyone reading this the quickest method to get the most spawn is:
Print -> Agar -> LC -> grain -> Substrate bags.

you could go from print to putting 10 bags of spawn into the ground in the space of about 2-3 months if you're on it (as opposed to the 8 its taken me)

anywho my aim was planting at the end of feb and thats what I did, 6 full bags of spawn and two shady sheltered spots (as sheltered as you can get on the top of a hill in wellington)

some nicely solid spawn blocks

one of the patches will be in this big planter

first layer red chip/sawdust

second layer random mulch

and finished off with another full bag on that with an equal amount of soaked red chip in between each spawn layer then a double layer of red chip/mulch on top.

Im really gunning for some fruits this season which is still about 4 months away but still I mixed 1:1 spawn and fresh chip so hoping with regular watering it'll be alll good.  :mushroomgrow:  :mushroomgrow:  :mushroomgrow:

in addtion to all that ive been playing around with aspen shavings.

seeing as I have more LC than I know what to do with i thought id try skipping a step and putting LC straight into spawn bags.

I tried sawdust/wheat hulls and got nothing but these babies are doing fiine.
these bags are a 50/50 mix of grain and aspen shavings inoculated with 30ml of LC 20 days ago and probably due a shake.

I also did the same to a couple jars  - very interesting point about these is that the first points of growth actually appeared directly on the aspen shavings themselves.. so my next experiment is going to be full bags of aspen/red chip/mulch done straight up with LC hoping to maybe cut out the grain part all together which means not having to open up the bags at all until theyre done colonising - altogether might be a bit slower but I think anything else I do from now on would be prep for next years patches anyway

current incubator:

Ill be real interested to see what the fruits come out like - this was the patch I took prints from, lots of nice dense wavy clusters.

I do also distinctly remember them having very thin caps when dried so ive potentially actually got cyans on my hands but only time will tell

What a rollercoaster!!?!
:asianofapproval:

Looking good thought! Good luck with fruits this season. . .

I put 1/3 jar of year old sub spawn onto some hand chipped poplar. . . I'd left the poplar soaking and neglected it for a few months. . . Drained. . . Layered. . .
One week in. . .

Three weeks in. . .

I'm going to mix this with a metre of soaked pine when colonised. . . For next season. . .

More trouble tales to add. . . Though hopeful this season. . .

Round one 2018. . . BRF cakes with gum & poplar saw dust. . . Innoc'd with P.sub wild clone on agar. . . Some buried on garden (sparse fruiting for 2 seasons) some mixed in tub with poplar chips. . . 3 flushes in tub then transferred to garden. . .

Round two. . . Rye sub spawn scattered around wood chipped back yards. . .
Three friends with different properties all with established wood chip beds, mainly pine, some with bark peelings, some coloured pallet mulch. . . Spread end of June 2019. . . Hoping to see something on any of them. . .

Round three. . . Multiple jars of rye sub spawn mixed with freshish pine mulch delivered from a landscaping supplier Feb 2019, watered through summer 19-20. . . Myc surviving better on less watered areas so watering stopped?

Round four. . . 2020 Poplar chip with (sub) LC, rye and slurry (4-5m²). . .
Poplar was old and already had a white rot fungus living in it. . . 2 months in no growth from LC (no surprises) or slurry, grain has good growth. . . Added more rye spawn to areas of no growth. . . 2 months on, almost broken down to nothing. . . Not looking hopeful. . .

Hoping that this season one of these will do something!!?!

yeah it was a bit of a journey

wow they seem to love that poplar chip hey, Im thinking to get ahold of some deciduous/hardwoods and do some hand chipping.
I suspect the red tui stuff is mostly or wholly pine and in the interest of patch longevity some more solid/ long term substrate wouldnt be a bad plan.

hope you see some fruits this season, not exactly filling me with hope for mine that you have some from 2019 yet to produce lol

I have hope. . . You have fully colonised bags. . .

I reckon they're is a necessity to get hot and dry before fruiting. . . Tis but a hunch though. . .

Thanks for contributing to the experiment!

hmm noted, Ive been watering every couple of days this last week to help it get established, had a peek under the cardboard today and scraped away the top few chips to see plenty of nice fresh myc growth.

But yeah maybe Ill take that down to more like once a week by the end of the month and only resume regular watering when the temp starts to drop overnight.

How do you choose the plant that goes on the top of the bark? [Re: Bobbit]
    #27308866 -

Hi.

Any tips on what plant you choose to put on top of the bark of the pot plant? Some plants product more Nitrogen??

Obviously not a Cactus as it will be receiving too much water..

Totally anecdotal on where I seem to find each type, but here is my two cents worth...

Subs and seco's seem to like grasses and flaxes - maybe Anemanthele lessoniana

Angulospora tend to like apodasmia similis quite a lot, but you'd need well draining soil.

Weraroa tend to like it a bit shadier and tend to be happy around ferns.

Slurry Tek [Re: Bobbit]
    #27340709 -

Hi team...
Last season i decided to distribute about 5-10% of my P. subaeruginosa finds to new habitats. Mostly by burying mushrooms, or parts there-of.  I haven't seen any fruiting from these 1 year on.
But i also made a slurry and poured it on the nice new woodchip border at Mum n Dads.
A Slurry seems counterintuitive at first, because you are homogenising (whizzing up) perfectly nice mushies....
...But trust the process - because every little piece of whizzed up mushroom can still be viable & grow. And the whole mix is full of ALL the spores of the mushrooms in your slurry.

Here's my story:
Dad had prepared the garden border around September by laying black matting all along the planting area, cut around existing shrubs and plants.  Then dumped and spread woodchips directly on top. I came along around June and sprinkled the slurry on it.... one year later:  holy crap:

since finding a few small dry ones a month or so ago, I have been watching the new patch flourish:

and picking the odd few to repeat the process:
a few mushies... a splash of filtered water -> in the blender:

I take that concentrate and dilute it with filtered water, to 1.5l... although i think this could be diluted a lot more:
  ready for distribution.
I have made a few of these so far... and today i noticed what looks like good myc growth EVERYWHERE i sprinkled it.
If these new patches can brave the wild world for a whole year-  then next year could be CRAZY.

Put some stem butts to card board and agar 5 days ago.

Once the agar has been cleaned up I will make 20 or 30 tranfers and put them a whole bunch of agar dishes into some more cardboard.

Yeah, thats the dream ay... Your own patch where you dont have to go hunting for it- or worry about it getting ravaged. (Unless Bobbit sends his wife round looking for lemons- then you're fucked)*

Yes he got the woodchips from a bulk garden supplies place; no special treatment on the chips. I will try to find out what wood they are.
They also have 3 other (non active) mushroom species growing from them in different places.
I am planning on replicating his woodchip border this spring at my place; with an aim to seed it with a slurry next year (and spores this spring- why not)... Fruits for 2023!
..  so far all my slurries this year have been poured onto public habitats.

It would be particularly interesting to identify what the wood chips are. I understood subs preferred pine, and possibly eucalyptus. If they can adapt to other substrates it broadens the options. Interesting they spawned on what Im guessing were fresh chips.

I went and had study of some pics: and i have determined that I have no idea what wood(s) are in it.
Looks like a lot of bark in the mix.. And it looks like maybe a few differernt species based on the different bark..  so might be just a good old mix.. ?  I am talking out my arse so more educated guesses are welcome; until(if) I can find out.

Yeah, pretty sure they just chuck whatever's at hand into the chipper. I envy guys like you, set up so you don't have the grind of the search. Ive been out every day for the past 2 weeks and found sweet bugger all. The weather's been shit though. I've been wondering about subs. Do you think they can be found inland, or are they, as I suspect, more coastal?
