I tend to use my worst plates for germination. Sloppy pours, bubbly plates, condensation etc.

Ok that makes sense. Thought your plates were fermenting or something :laugh2:

I just saw that a local mill (bob's red mill) makes a millet flour. Could I try the same weight of millet flour in the stead of the LME?

I don't see why not, I would try a run of it and see how it works.

Nice plins. (plate pins).

That plate looks like the surface of the moon.

  • What's the variety?
  • Does charcoal act as a nute?
  • Do you think it was mostly the yeast extract?
  • Do you think it was transferring from one nute to another? If so, that's worth some experimentation. Let me know please what thread to sub if you start on that!

  • RustyWhyte x Melmak F2
  • Kind of? I'm not too sure on how it actually works, I've just seen healthier mycelium on my charcoal plates than on my regular ones. And there's a lady on here from the Philippines that uses charcoal in her edibles cultivation at 3% of the substrate and she's grown some massive mushrooms compared to her control beds. I do know that mycorizzhae love charcoal and preferentially colonize it -- using it as a home where it can accumulate nutrients. So I use it in my agar and my grain spawn for fun.
  • Not sure, yeast extract provides some additional nutes that most would wisely assert aren't necessary for healthy myc. Again, I've got it, and I prefer the way my mycelium looks when it's in the nute recipe so I'm sticking with it.
  • Transferring between nutrient sources certainly cause most fungal species to adapt and shift enzyme production to properly metabolize a new food source. That's been validated by many mycologists.

Yeah, I read through that whole thread. It got a bit more technical than I need. If charcoal improves the quality of my mycelium then I don’t really need to know exactly why, I’ll just keep using it. Microbially inoculated charcoal works wonders in my garden so having my cubes precompost charcoal for me is a win win.

Hi Seeker604,

Those are some really impressive plates! Are you wrapping the Parafilm around the plate once?
I believe D3 wrote he does that also.

But I started out thinking general practice was twice around. Which is why I was so excited
to see in a SW video, the guy folded the parafilm and went once around, but it made two layers.

So I believe I only see one layer on yer plates, do you cut the strip lengthwise in half?
I think I have the same parafilm 2"x 250 FT.

Curious minds, seeking for the truth...and all that!

Awesome cat, he looks like he's doubting what the person above is saying...

I should probably wrap mine twice as I some times see lil splits when I take it off but so far have never had a satellite so haven’t worried about it.

2"x 250 FT parafilm seems bit too large, I'd assume its being cut in half.

and holy cow D3!!! those plates are amazing. wish I could find some spores that look like that after germinating.

Bummer!

Looks like fungal plant pathogen, but hard to tell unless you look at microscopic level. Fungi are very diverse organisms and have different developmental stages so it is hard to visually identify most of them.

Thank you! I start with a single wrap of parafilm. Once I know a plate hasn't developed any contams on it, I then add a second layer of parafilm and allow the plate to fully colonize.

I cut the standard length (2 of the "squares" on the roll of film), then fold it in half length-wise before wrapping the plate.

S604
