Anyway that plate looks all kinda contaminated. The watery cloudy looking stuff is bacteria. Srry to crap on your bday cake. Unless that is jst optical illusion. Is that a grain you transfered?

This pic was like an hour after I poured it. That's my only qualm about jars, I have to look at them from the bottom. I think you are seeing the sfd on the lid. And the innoc is a grain of spawn. It's what I had and I got horny to start some agar work.

If I still did no-pours I'd probably buy those deli containers they seem perfect for this. I also noticed the unicorn bag people have started producing reusable culture type dishes with an SFD attached to the top. Their website says you need to email them for a quote but I was kinda thinking about it. I figure they'll probably be overpiced but, considering what it is maybe they are cheap.

I love using petri dishes but I hate throwing so much plastic shit in the garbage. The petri dish type of plastic isn't recyclable, correct? Maybe it is?

The shortest height one seems like it would be good. But if they are pricey than using deli containers and figuring out filtration yourself is a better option

I wash my plastic ones and reuse them. I just washed then dry then disinfect then into the flow hood where I disinfect and pour. I didn't like the idea until I had a bunch and tried it. I haven't had any contams related to it so I've kept using them. I do like my half pint jars tho.

I thnk spent uranium is about the only thing that isnt reasonably recyclable.

I hear like 90% of plastic that ends up in the recycling depot here ends up in landfills.

I mean, maybe it can be recycled but it sounds to me after speaking to some people who know more about this than I do, that most of what goes into the recycling still hits the landfill

spiritlands, i just broke down and got my first case of disposable petri dishes. been using autoclavable plastic ones up till now. i'm gonna try reusing them. what do you use to disinfect them?

I just try to do my part. like at Subway, they always stuff it in a bag and I walk ten feet eat my sandwich and throw the bag away. So now I ask for no bag. I repurpose food containers for hides for my snakes. I don't really buy any drinks in plastic bottles anymore either. I'm not against it but I drink more from cans or coffee I reuse the same cup.

Western Nations did send it over seas and instead of processing it there they started dumping it in the ocean. There's an island called komoda island, it's kinda famous. It's in the middle of nowhere and the locals don't let ppl go there much. There's a herpetologist (reptile guy) that went there and they almost couldn't get to the island do to floating plastic. There isn't a person on the island and it's covered.

Jjackflash- were your autoclavable ones just little Tupperware or were they real pitris? Honestly I've been using Dawn dish soap, then I rinse them, dry them with paper towel. I wipe them with alcohol as they go into the flow hood. I have 100% pure isopropyl I spray them with face up in my hood until they dry, then I pour. I'm sure somebody has a better way but I can sure do a lot more plates when I don't use jars. These are cheap and flimsy and they still wear out but I get a lot more uses

I have 4 dozen borosilicate glass petri.

Harder to use, yet continuously reusable. . .

Look up polystyrene recycling. We produce and use a shitload, yet don't recycle much as a species.

Being recyclable and being recycled are a world apart. We still produce far more refuse than we recycle. . . Maybe our great great grandkids can mine our landfills to extract the plastic. . .

Well they use depleted uranium for munitions but it's more of a by-product of making enriched uranium than recycling as I understand it...

I'm really excited for agar work, just cooked up my first batch, but I am doing my best to stay away from plastics in my cultivation. That's why I'm using the pita jars until I throw down for the glass ones.

Then again I try not to use single use plastics at all. I have a stainless water bottle and coffee cup and even carry a travel untensil kit so I never get stuck eating with a plastic forks. My wife and I throw away about a grocery store bag of trash between the both of us every 2 weeks, which ends up being mostly packing material from online purchases.

Plastic has it's place in society. I wouldn't wear a hardhat made of steel, not would I climb a hemp rope. I also won't sterilize a mycobag in an oven bag in a PC. Sorry for the digression.

So my 3 year old atl#7 syringes have germinated onto agar nicely. However I’m not sure if I’m identifying cobweb or some other Mold on the plate. You can see at about 12oclock on this plate the myc looks different and it is growing faster than the other myc, but not much faster so that’s why I’m not sure. :confused:



What do you guys think, contam or myc?

Looks like the spot at 12 is definitely mold, but the smaller dots are the goods. I would make transfers ASAP! :cheers:

Kinda idiot question as I used print before but now have a syringe. Do I just put a drop of solution on top of the agar or poke into it?. I could put a larger drop on and streak from it?

I have a self sterilizing inoculation loop. I made it with a vape mod and rda. I just stretched out a coil leaving one small loop. It heats red hot in a second with no flame
