Sounds like our pressure cookers are just as expensive. The cheapest I can find is the same 23q Presto from AussieMushroom which is $180AUD. That's not including shipping, but they have a store in Vic. They're also out of stock till August. (Upon further investigation while writing this, it doesn't look like they ship out of Aus)

I did notice that BallMason have the same PC for $189AUD, so if you're in NSW and can pick it up from Kempsey that's your best bet. For NZ though their shipping rate is $50 so ends up being the same as the Amazon one. :unbelievable:

Probably have more luck getting one cheaper second hand.

Hey good peoples,

Great idea for a thread. Been cursing for a while on how hard it is to get shit that the seppo's have on every corner.
I get three 1 liter canning jars from KMart for 10 bucks.
Oats from the local stock feed shop and most other stuff from aussimushroomsupplies but living in WA the post isn't cheap. always on the lookout for a better alternative.
I did see 3kg of wheat in Coles the other day for $3. It says its for chook food and is not fit for human consumption but maybe the mushrooms will like it. Have yet to give it a go.

Cheers.

Yep the preserving jars from KMart and Big W seem to be the go, cheap as also. Try looking at local feed stores, I looked at a local bird supply store and found 25kg of oats for $25. Not bad for $1/kg!

Like... don't suppose you people have any knowledge on good pressure cookers in Aussie? Seems like the best deal for us in Aotearoa is buying the 23qt presto off Amazon, which comes to a tasty $220NZ ($112 for cooker and $108 for shipping...)

Hey mate, how's things?
Yep sounds about right, I paid $200 for my 23qt presto off eBay, free postage of course but still cost me $200 out of pocket. Definitely the biggest setback and hardest item to improvise.

Welcome friend.  It seems to me like we're unlikely to find a large PC locally for under about AUD$180.  I bought mine about a month ago here (I think it ended up being about $140 with free shipping):

might have been via this portal though (I can't remember):  https://www.newegg.com/global/au-en/p/N82E16896750022?item=9SIA0ZX0TH7993&ignorebbr=1&source=region&nm_mc=knc-googleauadwords-global-mkpl-pc&cm_mmc=knc-googleauadwords-global-mkpl-pc-_-pla-beachaudio-_-pressure cookers-_-9SIA0ZX0TH7993&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIr_Pqy8D-4gIVQpWPCh1gJAbHEAkYBSABEgJ9fvD_BwE

100L bags of verm go for about $35 pickup here. Seems cheap I guess but I mainly use coir and am making the swap to oats from rye grain. Much cheaper! (about $1/kg opposed to $5/kg for rye)

I've got stuff growing over in NZ. Tips for a newbie though, if you're wanting to do this on the cheap, go gather a bunch of pinecones, buy a secondhand blender, soak the pinecones for a couple of weeks (split them with a hatchet first!) and run them through the blender until they're broken up (you want a range of chip sizes, not sawdust) and then put sub stem butts on these in a closed container.

Easy, cheap, and will get you a bunch of happy mycelium that can be used to make your own patch.

I assume eucalyptus would also work.

My wee container

Just found this thread! Fucking love it!! Thought I’d add a tip for any aussies starting off.. Bunnings sell a few different types of coir (brunnings brand and tumbleweed worm farm bedding) Check the ingredients of the brunnings brand as some types contain fertiliser (I know the feed and mulch one does). The tumbleweed worm farm bedding is expensive (about $8 a brick) but it’s leached of any sodium and is really good quality! There is a smaller brunnings brick that has reptile bedding listed in the uses on the side and it’s only a couple of bucks but seems to be a little harder to find at some outlets. Hope this helps somebody!🤙

Hi everyone,

I really wanted to try cultivating this year... but I'm a bit late in the season as it turns out.

I'd be very grateful if anyone can spare some grain spore, or a slice out of petri dish, or even some flesh!

Thanks!

Its never too late, unless you are referring to the picking season. Otherwise, grab some myco supplies, and give some BRF cakes a go. Hop onto the marketplace there's plenty of giveaways

I've been reading up so many teks and I'm thinking of starting straight away with agar and monotub it.

Thanks for the great thread. It's great to have an Aussie community to help each other out.

I guess the hardest parts I've found is getting a cheap pressure cooker and some prints.

Regarding prints I have seen aussie mushroom spores and wanted to ask anyone's opinion on them. Thinking of grabbing a mazatepec print.

And if anyone has used alternatives from pressure cooking. Would an advent baby bottle sterilzer work. I even have a thermomix which steams as well but would only fit half pint mason jars.

What about homebrew shops for grains and iso. Though that's probably not the cheapest options.
