wonder if mushrooms watered with food coloring water would absorb the color the way plants do

Mycellium doesnt like certain colours, when I use blue food colouring it stalls.  Must be something in there it doesnt like.

I didn’t use food coloring, the agar came like that.

I use blue, son of a b. I'm changing it up and see if it works. I guess I could try red

I tried food colouring a couple times and the mycelium eventually started feeding off it. Happened with red and green...the plates ended up looking really funky

I went back to no food colouring. I honestly didn't find much benefit from it :shrug: it's slightly easier to see some contams I guess but it wasn't enough of a game changer for me to keep using it.

yeah that part seemed normal to me, it was more the low cfm that seemed abnormal. Based on some threads I'm looking at it sounds like it might be fine but I'm still not totally sure.

Nah...that's good! Hell the one I use is 350cfm...nah you're good.

Yeah, it sounds fine to me. What brand of filter?

As long as your filter is providing 100cfm of flow (approx) across the front, after passing by the filter it should be fine.

I know it's been asked but gonna make grain water agar. Do I just use half grain water half water? I thought about all grain water but that may be too much. Thanks guys

i filter my gw for this and don't dilute it. but like said it's gonna depend on a few other factors, so when you got your grain prep consistent, it's easy to test different dilutions and see what you like.

I gave up on grain water because it was really hit or miss for me. When it worked it was amazing but other times it seemed low nutes even though I used same grain simmer water (from wheat). I went back to MEA..all good...I love the smell of malt extract :lol:

My first run with grain water was horrible, didn't realize till I tried to do a transfer from it but I had made my agar way way too stiff. Of course first time with grain water and first time with telephone brand agar. Apparently telephone brand has some extra my last agar powder didn't.

I think this little fella deserves a trip to the world of plate life.  What level of nutes do you guys use for clones?

Im thinking low nutes first and then quickly get it to T2 with more nutes.

I use the same recipe for clones, cleaning, transfers, and germing :shrug: itll grow on whatever level of nutes, i dont think you'll even notice the differences if you did go thru with changing nutrition between plates.

It will grow on any level of nutes but I find when cloning a wild mushy I like to do it on lower nutes as it grow quicker and then I transfer to my 2% again to get a nice culture.  I mix it up but there is definitely a difference in the speed and thickness a culture grows.

I finally got some powdered agar instead of this flaky shit that I had before. I think I may have used too much agar tho because the myc is not jumping off the transfer piece. What sucks is I only need about 6 of these “plates” at a time and I have to guess the ingredients measurements.

The myc ended up liking the flavor red agar after all, I’m stoked! First real agar for me :smile:

I’ve tried a whole heap of colours, and none seem to be any different.
Crazy how the myc ends up eating the colour also. . .

If you are making small amounts of agar in round containers. . .
Area = pi * r * r where 3.14 is close enough for pi.
Volume = Area * thickness = pi * r * r * thickenss
Times that by how many you are making. . .

E.g. for 4mm thick Ø100m plates = 0.4cm thick Ø10cm plates as 1ml = 1 cubic cm. . .
3.14 * 5 * 5 * 0.4 = 31.4ml (cm³) for 6 plates roughly 188.5ml
2% agar (2% nutrient & gel) is 3.8g agar 3.8g with 188.5ml of water. . .

So This is my second time growing after using the brf tek I wanted to up my game a bit. I made agar plates out of grain wash and inoculated on the 29th of September. Its been only 4 days but I think my plates are fucked. What I have growing now is spreading rapidly over the surface of all of them. could anyone identify what it is? somehow its on every plate... Unless its mycelium (to me it looks way to thin and spreads way too rapidly)

Any recommendations on what to try in the future? I'm a little frustrated but I understand this is a slow process. Thanks for the help.
*I just spent a few minutes reading through the thread and feel I should mention that I used 400mL 100% grain soak water(boiled in grain 45min) and 8g agar. Why does dilution of the grain soak result in better growth?

They don't...but it'd be a lot cooler if they did!

How's the FH build going? Filter come yet?

Yeah it arrived in good condition. 99.99% 24x24, only cost me 150.

Still need to order a blower though. but from where

You got yourself some mould there, a couple of different flavors! 👍

I notice you haven't wrapped your plates? You will need to pour/inoculate in an SAB or similar aseptic environment, then wrap with clingfilm to stop any competitors.
