Cactus Grafting Competition 2016
    #22682425 -

Welcome to the 2016 Ethnobotanical Garden Grafting Competition!

Disclaimer
Lophophora are illegal in some localities. If you live where it is illegal (like the US) then there may be serious legal consequences for growing Lophophora or even possessing Lophophora seeds. For example, if you are caught growing Lophophora in the US you could be charged with manufacturing a Schedule I substance. The Shroomery, Mind Media Inc., forum staff, and forum members do not encourage you to break the law. If you do chose to do so, be aware of the potential legal risks and consequences. Only you can be held accountable for your own actions!

This year there are again two other quickest to flower contests which do not involve Lophophora. There are also 3 overall contests which you may enter using any genus/species. Take advantage of these contests especially if you have reservations about violating your local laws.

The competition will started on March 20, 2016 12:00 PM UTC in order to give people time to get seeds and propagation stations ready. Fortune favors the prepared.

Categories :

Species Specific:
  •     Quickest to Flower Lophophora
  •     Quickest to Flower Astrophytum
  •     Quickest to Flower Turbinicarpus

Overall:
  •     Best Freak
  •     Most Beautiful Scion
  •     Best Grafting

The Rules:

Be honest; cheaters ruin it for everyone.
    Be respectful
    Have fun!

Take lots of photos. It keeps the contest interesting and documentation showing the progression of your work is required.
Please post photos of the germinated seed, then the successful grafts and progression.
Post progression photos in this thread at least once a month, but please not any more than once a week (except for timelapses of course). If you do not, your entry may be disqualified.

All scion seed must be sown after 12:00 PM UTC March 20, 2016.
No new scion seed may be sown after 12:00 PM UTC June 20, 2016.
There are no limitations on stock: anything goes.
You may re-graft whenever you feel like it.
You may sow as many seeds as you'd like.
You may make as many grafts as you'd like.
You must sow your own seed and make your own grafts
Normal, hybrid, irradiated, chemically treated, etc. seeds are all allowed.
In vitro treatments and micro-propagation are allowed.

Quickest to Flower time will be decided determined using the flower post time minus the sow date picture post time. This means you need to take a picture and post a picture of when you sow and when you see your flower.

The deadline to challenge a Quickest to Flower entry is 92 days from the first flower posted per species category. This is to allow for a challenge from someone who sowed later in the 3 month sowing window.

Overall contest entries may be from any seed originating from a member of Cactaceae not just the 3 quickest to flower genera.
Overall categories will be judged ~12 months from the contest start date.
Overall categories winners will be decided by a popular vote.
You will be required to limit your final entries for the Overall contest polls to no more than 3 entries per category. For example, you can make 100+ grafts, but you cannot enter more than 3 into the best freak poll, 3 into the most beautiful poll, and 3 into the best graft poll.

The Prizes :
The best prize is glory, but there will be physical prizes like previous competitions. If you wish to pledge a prize please PM Mostly_Harmless. You can pledge for a specific category or to the contest in general. Prizes will be announced in this thread.

THIS IS OPEN TO ALL MEMBERS WORLDWIDE. ANY SUGGESTIONS TO IMPROVE THE RULES/COMPETITION ARE WELCOME BEFORE MARCH 10th 2016.

Cool. I will probably actually participate in this. Never done a grafting competition before, or many competitions at all really. I'm still pretty much a grafting newb, but it'll be fun either way!

One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree.
'Which road do I take?' she asked.
'Where do you want to go?' was his response.
'I don't know', Alice answered.
'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'

i finally found my seed stash, and i have plenty of Lophophora seeds to sow. I also have ridiculous amounts of Ferocactus, melocactus, stenocactus and Notocactus, well, those will be probably the ones that will compete for the latter 3 categories. Too bad i lost my Monstrose gymnocalycium seeds, as those were likely to produce freaks.

Just ordered a bunch of seed: Astrophytum super kabuto, saguaro, pilosocereus bradei, chamaecereus silvestrii, chileorebutia emeraldana, esposta nana, and azureocereus imperator
gonna sow most of those soon, saving the astrophytum and some lophs for the comp.
