Re: Cactus Grafting Competition 2016 [Re: Mostly_Harmless]

Hi all, this is my first post ever in the shroomery. i've been reading the ethno garden for a few years now, and i've been growing cacti for about ten years. when i saw the grafting campetition had started and i was still in time to join, i told myself: this is the right time for setting an account on shroomery.
Fortunately enough i had some pereskiopsis prepared from last week, as well as a mix of seeds from a friend's collection (some arios, epithelanthas, turbis in there, just don't know which species) and when i was setting up for the competition i found some fruits on 2 of my lophs and on 3 of my turbis, also i had already sown some seeds from one of my T. pseudopectinatus.
So the last few days i've been sowing and preparing grafting stocks

Here are my sowing dates:

04/28/2016:
Turbinicarpus pseudopectinatus

04/30/2016:
Seed mix (not quite sure whats in there haha)
mammillaria mix
Lophophora koheresii
Lophophora Williamsii var. caespitosa
Turbinicarpus ysabelae
Turbinicarpus schmiedicheanus
almost forgot: Turbinicarpus lophophoroides (Posibly an hybrid, as I only have one)

some grafting stocks getting ready

Hi ceiba - nice to see you here.  Glad to see you entering the grafting comp.  I have been growing cacti on their own roots for more years than I care to confess, but I am having a go at grafting this year.

4 weeks update. Seeds started Abril 1st, grafted 12 days later. Of the original 6 attempted, 3 are going strong (would be 4 if not for an unfortunate accident with one of the tubes). Here they are:

The unfortunate accident had one rather unimportant upside: now all the grafts are the same species, Lophophora alberto-vojtechii.

I still have a lot of seedlings and some grafting stock ready, so I may add to these later on. When's the deadline for grafting?

No specific deadlines on grafting other than when the competitions end of course

The Alberto seems like an excellent choice for grafting.

Since it typically is much smaller in the wild, does that mean it won't get as large on a graft?

Why are seeds of this species so expensive/rare? Are they hard to get to set seed?

Basically because they're novelty (the species has only been described in 2008 or so). Soon they will be as inexpensive as any Lophophora species except for L. williamsii (this will keep a higher price because you can get a few trips out of it, if you are skilled and really patient).

They will get a bit larger than their "natural" size on their own roots and will also pup (which supposedly they don't).

Im in the same boat spaceman. I've gotten distracted by a serious fungus gnat infestation. Killed off my poor tobacco  I've got three nice little L. Williamsii var. Texana and a half dozen real nice stocks ready to go though.

I know for a fact they pup,and mine got quite a bit larger than they do in the wild, before I degrafted it:cool:

So i got my Lophophora alberto-vojtechii and Tephrocactus geomtricus longispanus seeds today and those tephro seeds are not what i expected. They look weird so i did a google search and they look about right.

So now if anybody has any tips or tricks to get these guys going please let me know. Ive read several things from putting them in water over night. Putting them directly in soil and if you get no germination. Let it dry out and tey again. Ive heard of stratification. Also the other method where you put sand paper in a match box and rubbing off the outer layer. I dont know what its called. But i really want these babies to get going.

So went with the soak overnight and then place in a papertowel and check it a week later. Only one thing, now that i put them in warm water for overnight all the seeds are floating on the top. Not one sunk to the bottom. Does this mean all of them are duds?

Not at all - I have found that is a total fallacy.

I've got a question as well, albeit and annoying one,
how long do you guys think until I can start propogating/using these for grafting? I've already cut/broken off a couple of the tips and replanted them, they seem to be doing fine.
The biggest one is starting to thicken up, would it be better to leave part of that fresh growing tip and cut it like halfway up rather than cut the whole thing off?

kinda fucked that up

Wrll now its the damn black ants. Ive had it with those little fuckers. The decapitated my lone williamsii graft and cut off the only 2 tubercules of my astrophytum caput medusae. I mean what the fuck with these assholes. They like the warm moist environment. The always move in with their babies and as soon as i shake the pot they all come rushing out. They have totally pissed me off so i sprayed raid all along the bottom and on the sides. Im no organic gardener so fuck them. Im so pissed.
