Re: Cactus Grafting Competition 2016 [Re: modern.shaman]

Another 4 weeks have gone by.
Lophophora alberto-vojtechii, now 12 weeks from sowing.

Escobaria abdita, 10 weeks from sowing. The stalled seedling was regrafted to the same stock and took \o/

Turbinicarpus pseudopectinatus "rubriflorus", 10 weeks from sowing. One of them has exploded with growth, it's almost unbelievable!

And finally, of three attempted Astrophytum Superkabuto grafts, two took (7 weeks from sowing):

Looking fantastic Z! I envy your skill. Unfortunately the tray of seedlings I started at the same time as you, with all my non-lophs that I sowed most recently with you, were tipped over by a CAT and lost. I was heart broken and couldn't even thunk of grafting anymore. Your plants are pulling me back though!

My loph graft that was sowed in the first-second week of sowing is doing alright. I thought it was stunted due to being poorly placed, but in the last two weeks it's showing some growth

He's now getting full sun, so will hopefully see some good growth

I love that reddish hue when they pick up their pace. <3

Nice graft. Pity the others, couldn't you salvage some? :\

work has kept me a bit of the keyboard lately. It's great to see others' progress now I'm back. Great competitors u all have, can't wait to see them flowering.

Fly, sorry about your graft bro, looked quite promising, keep on trying, once u get one to take it's quite satisfying and bit a addictive too haha. Thanks for your compliments on the pics, I was quite surprised by the quality of the macros this cam can take. I'll keep on borrowing it.

Lsoares, that hipster loph's got swag. I'd love to see an alberto in real life, but I have yet to find someone nearby, with one in their collection. Your plants are huge, especially that escobaria, it's crazy.

Argyreia, you chose some rare plants, that red flowering astro will be a hard one to beat on the most beautiful scion when it flowers.

Ferrell, I'm looking forward to see your progress. I bet it's growing nicely in tx's summer.

P0stij. How's your regraft doing?

Modern, nice to see you back.

Fuzz, that loph' amazing. I had never seen someone grafting so low on the stock and with a grown graft on, i'm amazed by the growth you've achieved.

Here's my next update:

The ones on the self watering pot (capillar irrigation with a terracotta cup or "jarro" and a large beer bottle):

A new albino Ario just starting to put some growth. It is grafted in the sane pereskiopsis as the other one (sown 04/30/2016):

The first albino Ario (sown 04/30/2016):

Turbinicarpus ysabelae (sown 04/30/2016):

This is the one I thought was an Astro myriostigma, but now I'm pretty sure it's a Echinocactus platyacanthus hahaha. this seed fell in the wrong envelope. I guess this one is still up for the most beautiful scion. Anyhow I just grafted more astros from the same tray, so I can stay in track with the Astro competition(sown 05/13/2016):

Albino Mammi, just starting to grow (sown 04/30/2016):

Turbi pseudopectinatus (sown 04/28/2016):

(I'm now realizing I missed to take a picture of another T. pseudopectinatus)

Turbi lophophoroides (sown 04/30/2016):

Ario kotschoubeyanus (sown 05/13/2016):

The ones in the small pot:

Turbi pseudopectinatus (sown 04/28/2016):

Turbi pseudopectinatus (sown 04/28/2016):

The ones in the triple graft:

Loph koehresii (sown 04/30/2016):

Loph koehresii (sown 04/30/2016):

T. pseudopectinatus (sown 04/30/2016):

Quick, question. Hope you don't mind me asking here... It's evident you all have the answer(s) im searching for!

Awesome thread btw... gets me going. All that cacti

I have a Echinopsis pachanoi (:sanpedro:San Pedro:sanpedro:) that is highly light deprived, and has since gotten better, however, It is now flimsy and is too top heavy. What can I do to fix this so itll stand back up and continue with the nice thick growth its now producing?

Thank you so much! <3  :thanx:  :iloveyou:

In gratitude,

A pic would help - but I think I grasp the problem.

A simple way to make the heavier top section self supporting would be to cut it off at a substantial thickness and re-root it.

The now shortened bottom section will produce pups that you could also re-root.

Its the other way around! the bottom growth has been getting thicker (with more light) and the top is super sad and small and its just too weak to support itself/ not thick enough its like a limp noodle.

Argyreia, you're right, the pics would fit and look better if they were smaller, but I'm new to both photobucket and the shroomery, so I'm still working it out, if someone knows of an easy way to reduce the size (maybe cropping the pics) it'll be really helpful.

Im almost out of room for pics here so i'll have to stick with photobucket for now, and I'll edit them either there or in paint. Thanks anyway M_H.

I'll post my next update soon, but I want to show you, that I found some buds in the Turbi. lophophoroides today. Never thought it'd be so fast. I hope the get fully developed.

This thread is the ultimate why-to-graft thread. I'm wicked inspired ya'll... I only attempted a graft once = failed, but this makes me want to graft all the things.

Glad I has some pere's to play around with

I know that this isn't the place for this, but it's somewhat relevant and you guys didn't shoo away that other dude
How in the fuck
do you guys get your pereskiopsis
so thick and happy?

Mine get lots of sun, they have big angry spines that just love to get stuck in me if I breathe too hard on it
the leaves are long and skinny, not thick and wide like I see
and they are nowhere near as thick as a pencil

Here's some pics before I chopped them, I cut the two biggest ones last night

I put this one in the ground

I'm basically out of this competition, of the 50 loph seeds I sowed, only 5 of them remain and they have yet to be grafted.
Everybody said that pereskiopsis grows really fast so I totally thought I'd have a lot of stock right now
maybe I'm doing something wrong. It's finally hot and humid here all the time so I think that they'll start doing better, but 2 months of the year for strong growth doesn't satisfy me, perhaps I'll need an indoor setup for them.
