I'd like to start this discussion with some Tool lyrics, since I think they said it best.
I met a boy wearing Vans, 501s, and a Dope Beastie t, nipple rings, New tattoos that claimed that he Was OGT, back From '92, on the first EP.
And in between Sips of Coke He told me that He thought We were sellin' out, Layin' down, Suckin' up To the man.
Well now I've got some A-dvice for you, little buddy. Before you point your finger You should know that I'm the man,
And if I'm the man,
Then you're the man, and He's the man as well so you can Point that fuckin' finger up your ass.
All you know about me is what I've sold you, Dumb fuck. I sold out long before you ever even heard my name.
I sold my soul to make a record, Dip shit, And you bought one.
I've got some Advice for you, little buddy. Before you point your finger You should know that I'm the man,
If I'm the fuckin' man Then you're the fuckin' man as well So you can Point that fuckin' finger up your ass.
All you know about me is what I've sold you, Dumb fuck. I sold out long before you ever heard my name.
I sold my soul to make a record, Dip shit, And you bought one.
All you read and Wear or see and Hear on TV Is a product Begging for your Fatass dirty Dollar
Shut up and
Buy my new record Send more money Fuck you, buddy.

"The Man" is the personification of what's wrong with a society.
Fuck The Man.

Who is "the man" and of what is he guilty?
I'd like an answer to this, because I am part of society. Who is the man?

But Sclorch said:

What does that mean? Besides paying taxes, what else does "the man" represent?
I'm really curious. I'm trying to understand what you guys are talking about.

"The Man" is responsible for the "rule of thumb" law. "The Man" values control over individual freedom. "The Man" wants you to "fall into the Gap." "The Man" is at the helm of every greedy corporation (not saying ALL corporations are greedy). "The Man" would prefer constant war (see Orwell's 1984 for more detail). "The Man" is Satan, Big Brother, and a tax attorney all rolled into one. "The Man" has a wish list and your satisfaction/stimulation/education/whatever is not on it.
Got it?

the man is the answer to every question beginning with 'but why cant i' why cant i skateboard? why cant i read henry miller or burroughs? why can i expand my mind? why cant i puff this joint?
BECAUSE OF THE MAN! what a dick he is The man is big brother, uncle sam, and the almighty dollar he is a system of control that has evolved beyond petty force into an incredibly pervsive system of thought control
the man can and will plug you into a system where your mind is erased and you become nothing but a consumer, that is a harvestable resource for the man. THe man structures society in such a way that you will live and die a slave with every dollar you spentt perpetuating a war machine that grinds out suffering the world over AND YOU WILL NEVER EVEN KNOW IT

To the last 3 of you that posted, "got it".
So, is "the Man" in control of society? I have a feeling the answer is "yes". So let's save time and move to my next question.
What do you do about it?

What would I do about it? If it were possible, I'd kill that motherfucker in the most horrific way possible. I'd bury a pickaxe in his greedy fucking face. He does it to us day in and day out for money...for less than money. So why shouldn't we do it to him? I think it's the height of foolishness, weakness, and the submissiveness he needs for us to desire anything less than the torture and murder of "the man" and anyone who represents his ideals. And I'm not talking in the abstract. I mean anyone...I mean specifically John Ashcroft. I mean specifically 84 year old Helen R. Walton, who is 1 of 5 of the Wal-Mart heirs and owner of 20.5 billion dollars. I want to personally cave in that greedy, destructive bitch's face with a nine iron. It's been too long since we had an armed uprising.

wow the man got you down...
I personally live my life like I please. I firmly believe I can do anythung I want as long as it doesn't interfere with others. So I grow and I smoke and I trip without fear of any man.
my for greedy corps. I would say small businesses is better than large businesses. monopoly is not good. and the game is good.

Read Michael Moore if you want to know what to do, and specifically which people embody "the man". His book Stupid White Men realy lays it out for you. Also you guys all forgot the original man, organized religion. Peace in the Middle East.

The Man represents the oppresors, the greedy, rich, sterotypical politicians working out of greed and desire for power/fame/money/recognition.
The Man is the collective entitiy of humans who wish to keep us under control, The Man seeks to spread ignorance and discourage and dependence, instead of liberty, courage, and self-empowerment.
FUCK THE MAN!

it's easy to be complacent if your life is devoid of any blatant physical suffering. as long as you have what makes you basically comfortable it's easy to think that "life isn't so bad." there's no chance of an armed uprising in this country because there's no enough people who are that upset to make it work. also i think people would be afraid of having the national gaurd called out to "deal" with their group. the troops' orders would be to "stop the terrorists" - and we would be, believe me. we'd be portayed world-wide as anti-patriotic, anti-american terrorists with no distinction made between your fellow countryman and that dirty wog hiding in a cave. "Beware of Al-Qaeda cells in your neighborhood. Be suspicious of everyone - even your own family." who knows though, maybe that's what it will take. a group of people angry enough and willing enough to face the hellfires of government, military, and media to show the world that we're not afraid of The Man anymore, then the ball would start rolling. thing is, i have this belief that violence begets violence, and if there were to be an armed uprising, any damage the meagerly armed populace could inflict would be visited upon us 10 fold in the form of biological weapons and probably nukes. (...i had an extra strong cup of coffee this morning )

The Man operates out of fear, and takes advantage of YOUR fear.
Fear of losing your job. Fear of not fitting in. Fear of chaos. Fear of change. Fear of the unknown. And most importantly, fear of death.
The less fear you have, the less control the Man has over you.

I agree The Man is well trained at the art of war and advantage of their power over the misinformed masses. Fear & Misinformation is just the leverage The Man uses to make the world behave the way he wants it to. Restrictions and Punishment is all the man really knows. Humanity is a stake though, so we must challenge and change all that we feel is ?wrong? in our selves. Fight your own fears head on and get to know them personally.
I live without fear but it?s only after long struggles in my personal life that I can say that. I strive to learn as much and as many versions of history I can and make decisions of faith as they present themselves. We all make decisions that benefit mankind and more selfishly, ourselves. I do not let deadlines rush me; I do not break under the pressure of responsibility. The Man can not take your own wisdom away from you if you are honest and confident in what you?re are and are meant to be.
The Man is a reference to many aspects of our society apparently so I hope we don?t get stuck on terminology when talking about the concept of The Man.

The Man represents an ugly aspect of mass consciousness.
The Man plays a game, and it's your choice whether you play or not.
