Would you give it all up for a tribal existence?
    #21129272 -

You know, the hustle and bustle of western culture in which I'm sure most, if not all, of us here reside. Would you trade it all in for a hunter/gatherer existence, living in harmony with the planet - if you could?
Would you?
You may choose only one

Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not.

Not all it's cracked up to be either. You would have at most a half dozen choices of possible mates with saggy boobs - most of them your relatives. The chief's word would be Law. You would have to go on long hunting parties and bring back decaying, putrid meat, eat it and like it. You would have to learn stoopid dances and mutilate your body the same as everyone else. Forget any sense of individuality whatsoever. For entertainment you would war on neighboring tribes and be dead before age 35.

Ah, the good ole days! :elmo:

If you were born into such a society and then had to live like us at an older age, your probably hate it.

Same with visa versa.

I'd say that tribal living is probably healthier for us though, so overall many would be happy. At least those who've been fucked into the peasant class in our society.

the worst thing about modern days is driving, but lotta people like it.
I finally got a good subway to office job, but it ends soon, I will probably have to fly mondays and fridays again.

but it beats the rotten meat, stupid dances, and body piercing.
I am practically at my second lifetime ending too.

I love meat (raw or otherwise), dancing and body modification, so I guess I'd fit right in!

DQ - thanks for the quote man, sums up my feelings perfectly.

Your homework assignment is to buy some steak or fish and leave it outside for a week then report back to us on how much you  enjoyed it.

As to the other activities, remember that these are rarely personal choice issues.

Surely I'd have to kill the animal first? Buying (from a supermarket??) and then leaving it outside seems like a half assed attempt to me.

As for neck stretching, it is, I believe, only for females. As man I'd probaly be given scarification as my rite of passage. I've already got some of that:

I like the quote better in the context of the Playboy interview w/ Vonnegut.

Playboy: How do you feel about those who are making attempts at alternate social structures - such as communes?

Vonnegut: They want to go back to the way human beings lived for 1,000,000 years, which is intelligent.  Unfortunately, these communities usually don't hold together very long, and finally they fail because their members aren't really relatives, don't have enough in common.  For a community really to work, you shouldn't have to wonder what the person next to you is thinking.  That is a primitive society.  In the communities of strangers that are being hammered together now, as young people take over farms and try to live communally, the founders are sure to have hellish differences.  But their children, if the communes hold together long enough to raise children, will be more comfortable together, will have more attitudes and experiences in common, will be more like genuine relatives.

Playboy: Have you done any research on this?

Vonnegut: No. I'm afraid to.  I might find out it wasn't true.  It's a sunny little dream I have of a happier mankind.  I couldn't survive my own pessimism if I didn't have some kind of sunny little dream.  That's mine, and don't tell me I'm wrong:  Human beings will be happier - not when they cure cancer or get to Mars eliminate racial prejudice or flush Lake Erie but when they find ways to inhabit primitive communities.  That's my utopia. That's what I want for me.

Everything is better than it was the last time.  I'm good.

If we could look into each others hearts, and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care.

It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence.

I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too.  If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

Many Amazonian hunters would be gone for a week or more hunting monkeys for the tribe. The flesh turned putrid in a matter of days - long before they returned to camp.

Some African tribes eat dead bloated buffaloes.

The list goes on and on. Our modern sensibilities could not handle it.

I will try not to be too 'ignant'.

WTF kind of moronic ritual is this? No thank you! It would take a very sick mind to dream up this sort of sadomasochism.

I think reverting to a tribal existence would become a nightmare especially for women.
