Alright, you got me. Maybe I wouldn't magically make everyone a vegan, just those with the means to be one.

Do you also realize that The Pig, Cow, and Chicken Oversouls would not be happy that their numbers were decreased by over 90% as we would have little need to keep farming them? Are eggs OK? How did you come to this conclusion?

Would we still be able to eat chocolate-covered ants and deep-fried millipedes?

The oversouls will have to suffer for the sins of humanity. How did I come to what conclusion?

Why would you want to anyway?

You probably came to a conclusion as to whether eating eggs is moral or immoral and I am curious as to your thinking.

If the chickens are kept in really good conditions, I don't have too much of a problem with it.

You just told me your conclusion, but that is not what I asked.

Animals shouldn't be treated badly. They are sentient and we shouldn't be treating them like they are inanimate objects just for food that we don't actually need to survive.

for all of the "ethical" vegetarians here, how do you practice your diet without coming off as pompous or holier than thou. every time you go somewhere that is serving meat and you have to reply "I don't eat meat" how do you explain your reasoning without coming off as "I'm more compassionate than you"?

I just explain my reasoning as it is. If any "holier than thou" attitude is perceived it's in the mind of the listener.

this might seem weird but wouldn't an ethical vegetarian ideally want everyone to practice vegetarianism? by personally refusing meat, I feel like others feel that you secretly think less of them for eating meat. what's the best way to not seem like a total dick when refusing to eat what your peers do? this is all out of curiosity because I am very much considering cutting meat from my diet but with my lifestyle and friend group it seems extremely difficult and impractical.

It's not really that impractical to go vegetarian; I found it quite easy. Vegan is a bit more difficult, but then, I'm not a vegan. If you feel others think that about you, it's probably your own guilt making you think that. I don't expect everyone to follow the same ethical rules as me. Most of my friends and family don't.

I'm going to raise ducks for eggs.  Couldn't actually kill them for food.  They will be like pets because you get them young, they follow you around and become attached to you.  How could you kill your pet ducks?

Eggs are a much better survival strategy than some dead duck.

Apathy is my lighthouse.

Most people really don't care what you eat. To the other 5% I simply say "Because I don't have to eat meat to survive and there's a lot of vegetarian food I like."

Pretty simple.

i'm mostly vegetarian for ethical reasons. but hey, sometimes you gotta have a burger. i do what i can but i don't make the world bend to my lifestyle. if i go to a friend's house and he's grilling steaks i'm not going to turn that down. i'll eat turkey at thanksgiving too. out of all the things to be an asshole over, diet should be very low on the list.

It's funny that folks posting on the Shroomery would force others to adapt to their own life style choices if they had the power to do so, because everyone else's choice is "the wrong one." Sounds a lot like governments locking people like the majority of this forum's user base for utilizing "the wrong" psychoactives a one point or another in their lives. Or banning gay marriage because "its wrong." Gotta love the hypocrisy.

Not at the same level as eating meat. Animals are necessarily killed in insane numbers so that people can eat meat.

plants have feelings too. They just cant scream as loud. There is nothing wrong with vegetarians I just cant stand it when there reason is because its mean to the animals. How do you think the plants feel?

----
Maybe because the plants do not act like or look like us its okay to eat them...

Now not eating meat because of the saturated fats and other health reasons is a different story.

Plants have no nervous system that is comparable to other animals in any way. There is no reason to think that they feel pain in any way similar to animals.
