Morals vs. Ethics
    #13049331 -

I have spent many moons and fully grokked the separate concepts of Morals, and Ethics.

It would appear that modern culture in the United States, uses these words synonymously. Indeed the Websters dictionary even calls them synonyms. I however cannot in good conscience use these words as synonyms.

I have come to the conclusion, that a moral individual is one who follows a specific dogma. Usually religious in nature. Morality covers all manner of physical behavior, but defers only to the dogma itself for decisions on right and wrong behavior.

An Ethical individual on the other hand, is someone who follows in inherit set of social rules (or laws) which apply outside of religious dogma and morality. An Ethical individual relies not on the laws themselves for arbitration, but upon his own conscience (or more accurately, empathetic reasoning), and the social stigma associated with a specific behavior.

When viewed in this light, it is easy to see how an Ethical man may not be Moral, or how a moral man, may be unethical.

Do i understand it correctly, that you say, that morality is based upon rules and ethics are based upon empathy?

Wouldn't that make morality the result of ethics?

Doesn't that make the rule the result of experience?

I'm only trying to learn form your work btw. :smirk:

and the social stigma associated with a specific behavior.

I don't believe this applies to ethics because imo you're right back to morals. Ethics are personal and morals are social/religious.

That's an interesting point, "Ethics are personal, and Morals are social/religious." I feel like this is mostly true, but I would assert that there is a line of great difference between religious morals, and social ethics. Great numbers of people share the same code of ethics, yet do not share the same dogma of morality. Of course this is also observed in reverse.

According to Catholicism, it is immoral to engage in premarital sexual activities. However, doing so would never be considered unethical to a persons peers.

Insider trading in the stock market in considered unethical. But, running an insider trading scam isn't considered immoral.

Because of these examples, and a few more, I like to tie ethics to the tribe, and morals to the cult. Ethics are the often unspoken but necessary laws, that keep social friction at a minimum so we can all interact with one another without conflict. While morals are abstractions derived from religious texts, regarding how one should live their life in order to please the cult.

Well again I don't really agree but to each his own.

Imo morals are to be followed by everyone in the same way. Ethics are the personal distinctive decisions we make on how we want to live in the world and live with ourselves. They may be influenced by culture or society but do not have to be.
