ethical vegetarians
    #20130248 -

for all of the "ethical" vegetarians here, how do you practice your diet without coming off as pompous or holier than thou. every time you go somewhere that is serving meat and you have to reply "I don't eat meat" how do you explain your reasoning without coming off as "I'm more compassionate than you"? this might seem weird but wouldn't an ethical vegetarian ideally want everyone to practice vegetarianism? by personally refusing meat, I feel like others feel that you secretly think less of them for eating meat. what's the best way to not seem like a total dick when refusing to eat what your peers do? this is all out of curiosity because I am very much considering cutting meat from my diet but with my lifestyle and friend group it seems extremely difficult and impractical.

If they give you any shit, just tell them to "eat me".  Kind of covers all the bases.

With all due respect. As a meat eater with a vegan girlfriend. No one cares about what you eat. we care when you believe that everyone should be vegan how much healthier you feel and arent killing animal's. I hope that helped for when you are driving your prius to eat tofu.  It doesn't have to make you a different person. But it will. You will begin to look down on people. Thinking that you should only eat eith other vegans why cause seperation from a fellow brother who you hold thousands of different beliefs from.

I usually don't mention it at all unless I am asked. I also try to avoid having conversations about it because people ask so many ridiculous questions. If you do end up saying that you don't eat meat for ethical reasons and they get all annoyed about it, just ignore them. I haven't really had anyone get annoyed about it. A few people have asked me if them eating meat around me bothers me, and I just say no.

This is total BS. Plenty of people have cared enough about what I eat to ask me about it. Being vegan or vegetarian will not change you into some pretentious douchebag.

yea that's how I think I'd be as well. but I've always wondered...if an ethical vegetarian wanted to really see a difference wouldn't they wish that everyone else was a vegetarian. I guess I can see how you respect their right to choose and all but I feel that if one were truly passionate about their choice to be a vegetarian, non-vegetarians would irk you a little

If I had magical powers I would make everyone vegan, but I do not. Most people I have talked to would not change. Also, be prepared for tons of jokes at your expense. Also be prepared for those jokes to get old fast because people use the same ones all the time. I have had people jokingly tell me "you can eat that, there is no meat in it" so many times it is ridiculous.

Considering 95%+ of the population eats meat I don't expect them to understand so I live my life without regarding their opinion.

well what I'm saying is, why doesn't it bother you when people eat meat? aren't they part of the problem that you want to end? I realize that you can't always change their minds but does it get on your nerves a bit?

All people. Non-human animals have no reason with which to decide whether or not eating other animals is wrong. You may say that I would be taking away other people's ability to use their reason, but if they choose meat they made the wrong choice.  :whatyougonnado:

Yeah it bothers me somewhat, but I don't really want to make people feel bad/get them to berate me about it.

this is the point I was getting at in the first post. when someone finds out your a vegetarian (lets face it, you come over to grill out with your best buds and turn down burgers and hot dogs people are gonna wonder) there's a decent chance they'll ask about your vegetarianism a little. if you tell them you think that it's wrong how animals are treated and that they are killed I don't think you really have a choice on whether or not they feel bad or feel as though you think you're better than them because they do eat meat. maybe I'm thinking too far into it but this idea always crossed my mind

So do you care more about the ethical treatment of animals or what your friends think

Right, you can't help how they feel about your ethics on the matter. When people ask me why I am vegetarian I tell them. I'm just saying I have had people specifically ask me if it bothered them when they ate meat around me, usually as they were doing so, and I usually just say no or not really or something like that. If you explain it to them in a way that isn't pretentious or whatever and they still think that you think you are better than them, they are probably just projecting their insecurities onto you.

Alright, you got me. Maybe I wouldn't magically make everyone a vegan, just those with the means to be one.

I never said this would affect my decision on cutting meat from my diet. I simply want to know the thoughts about how my decision will ultimately affect those closest to me. I don't think I'm alone in not wanting my closest friends to feel as though I am challenging their lifestyle. will I still refrain from meat eating? yes, but I would like tips on discussing the idea with my friends and family without offending

I don't know what kind of asshole one has to be to be offended by you being a vegetarian. If they are that's their problem not yours and is probably their own cognitive dissonance. As long as you're not trying to proselytize. I've been a vegetarian for over a year now and most people don't care.

Do you also realize that The Pig, Cow, and Chicken Oversouls would not be happy that their numbers were decreased by over 90% as we would have little need to keep farming them? Are eggs OK? How did you come to this conclusion?

Would we still be able to eat chocolate-covered ants and deep-fried millipedes?

Milk and eggs are cool. I don't really have any use for pigs.
