I've read somewhere that ahimsa is part of the reasoning behind the rainy season retreats the monks do in SE asia. Because it's when the insects are heavily populated on the remaining dry ground that one can't avoid stepping on them to kill them.

Well that and probably mud.

And cock-a-roaches. It is OK to kill them. Oh, and poisonous spiders. And the fruit you eat that is fenced off from the deer. Fuck the deer, they are on their own.

And the computers we are on - it took lots of landmass to manufacture. We had to push many critters off their homes so that we could write messages articles and posts. Don't even get me started on hydro power and all of the poor salamanders, frogs and fishies that died to power our texts about ahimsa.

A discipline that is impossible to define or to follow seems rather pointless. None of the proponents here seem to be truly embracing it.

You probably know this, but the Jains (Jainists) do indeed wear masks at all times to avoid inhaling insects, and also carry a broom and gently sweep the ground in front of their feet to avoid stepping on any living critters.

They eat only that which falls naturally from the grain or tree, so they eat seeds and fruits but will not pick it, they only take what falls to the ground on its own.

When it comes to serious ahimsa (non-harmfulness) the Jains are as intense as it comes.
