The Buddha Holds Up A Flower
    #1140690 - 12/14/02 11:32 AM (13 years, 11 months ago)

This is a Zen Koan. I am interested in hearing everyone's interpretation and commentary. I'll share my own afterwards.

Once when the World-Honored One in ancient times was upon Vulture Peak, he held up a flower before the assembly of monks. At this time all were silent. The Venerable Kashyapa alone broke into a smile. The World-Honored One said, "I have the All-Pervading Eye of the True Dharma, the Secret Heart of Incomparable Nirvana, the True Aspect of Formless Form. It does not rely on letters and is transmitted outside the scriptures. I now pass it on to Kashyapa"

I think that what it's saying is that the true message of Buddha cannot be put into words. It can only be understood by the individual.

Heres my interpretation:
Truth is found in the true beauty of nature (truth=beauty). Truth cannot be put into any visual form. You can't imagine or visualise it, but you can experience it through the beauty of everything in nature. Truth is the fourth dimension. We are three dimensional beings living in a four dimensional universe.
Truth=Beauty=Nature

"I think that what it's saying is that the true message of Buddha cannot be put into words. It can only be understood by the individual. "

That's it!
There are no words to describe the teachings of Buddha, they cannot be written, or spoken, only understood. :wink:

The simplicity of life , the way we can achieve truth and the understanding of existence is one and singular, it can be seen by all and understood by all. It holds a perenial beauty wich is sustained by life itself so it never ends, it represents life and teaches life for the ones who wants to see it.

One of the basic ideas of Zen Buddhism is the belief that you can achieve enlightenment at any time, even in the body you currently inhabit. Nirvana is taken to be identical with the original Buddha-mind and Buddha-nature. Your mind and all its activities are functions of True Reality. The Buddha-mind is everywhere, so anything can result in elightenment at any time. The intent of Zen training is to make the mind pure, clear, and awake so that you can see and grasp the truth instantly anytime, anywhere.

The point of a koan is that conceputalization cannot lead to enlightenment. You should seek to be alert and aware so that a spontaneous event can more easily lead you to enlightenment.

My take on it is this...
The truth, enlightenment, the Buddha Nature, whatever one may call it, is not something that is taught or passed on or written down. Rather, it is inherent in all things. It is not something that you must seek and find, or have taught to you. It is already within you. It is the distractions and delusions of the ego, the delusion of a self seperated from the universe, that keeps most people from seeing through to the truth that All is One. In smiling, Kashyapa was as the Buddha holding up a flower. In holding up a flower, the Buddha was as Kashyapa smiling. Nothing was transmitted, told or taught; Kashyapa had looked beyond the ego and seen that he and the Buddha were One, and smiled a flowering smile back to the Buddha's smiling flower. He had real personal experience of the Truth, which is what really matters, and so Buddha said that he had passed the wisdom to Kashyapa.

buddahood exists in all things,

and I too agree, words mean nothing, experience is how you "know"
