Re: What is "supernatural"? [Re: trevorr]

There are different kinds of truths.  There are things we believe to be true about other people - weather someone loves us, likes us, dislikes us, whatever the case.  We don't have to presuppose anything supernatural to believe or "know" any of those things.  There is evidence in the form of language, body language, etc..

Let's not confuse that kind of "truth" with the "truth" about weather or not some physical entity exists.

Everything man makes is with materials from the Earth.

Why do we drive on parkways, and park in driveways?

That's it. There are a ton of words which don't make a lick of sense if you dissect 'em. But in conversation they work just fine and serve their purpose

No, it's not the same thing.  When someone says "man made," I know what they are talking about.  It means taking materials found in nature and rearranging them.  Everyone understands this.  When someone talks about believing in "supernatural" things, I don't know what they are talking about.  And I'm pretty sure they don't either.

Clever, but it's still a dumb word.

Yeah I agree. There's a lot of 'em though. You're just trolling as far as I can tell

That word is particularly dumb.  I hear people talk about believing in "supernatural" things all the time, and I never know what they are talking about. So how am I trolling?

Because no one here is going to convince you to take on their definition and you know it. You didn't post this in order to learn anything. You posted this to troll the users of this forum.

Tell me I'm wrong.

My point is that the word defines itself.  "super" ..."natural" means something that doesn't exist.  I don't see how it could be any other way.  How else do you define the word? I'm listening.

What is supernatural is what does not exist naturally. In that definition, anything created by humans could be considered supernatural, however humans are a natural being, thus does anything they create then become natural? This being the case, does that make everything natural? Anything to occur would essentially be natural. Nothing is supernatural, you are correct.
