I was thinking of taking a different approach with my career

I love exercise physiology. It is the one thing on this planet that I actually yearn to study. The thing is that even with a masters there are few jobs for an exercise physiologist. I have also been talking to some exercise physiologists online and they tell me that their jobs tend plateau. I dont want this.

I was discussing the issue with my father and I decided to look into a better route. My fathers sister is a head psych RN and she makes good money. She suggested that I become an RN, get a job, establish myself, and then look into getting my masters in exercise physiology as a sort of specialty for cardiac rehab. I think I could enjoy being an RN. I pretty much love anything to do with health. And if I could work up to becoming a cardiac specialist then that would be amazing. 

I have been looking at some schools and I think that this route of study would be the most promising for my career. There are tons of sick people out there and it seems to me that the health care system is always growing. Tomorrow I am going to have a sit down talk with an RN and discuss the pros and cons.


Any suggestions or related experiences?

now you're talking dude! you could continue your education in nursing beyond a bachelors degree... i was really kind of throwing hints at you constantly to really look into the whole physiology thing.  you can actually take your nursing education borderline MD in the long run.  good for you man...

so are you actually going to go through with this? you didn't comment...  one of my sisters is an emergency room shift head nurse at a very busy hospital in new jersey and she loves it.  school is very challenging though but i'm sure you can do it...  well?

I know what you mean about exercise physiology.  I dropped the idea of going to grad school for kinesiology after finding out the same thing.  I also have a couple RN's as friends/family...

Being an RN is a good choice in some respects and others you're going to have to think about a little more in depth.  First off you're usually well paid for what you do.  I know more than one RN who was pushing the upper 90's before they left.  As far as always finding a job...it depends on your area.  But generally it's a pretty safe bet that you'll be able to find work as an RN.

If having work and getting paid lots of money is what makes your dream job then you're set, but there's some drawbacks to nursing that I've noticed.  RN's work...a lot.  It really depends where you work but a lot of nursing jobs seem to be placed in environments where the majority of work you do is, um, less than pleasant.  I'm sure you can use your imagination on that one.  The kicker for me is that even though RN's are practically the lifeblood of wherever they are...they're overworked and often blamed for the majority of mistakes.  Especially in hospitals.  Unfortunately, the biggest shortages are in hospitals and that's where most RN's find employment. 

Nursing is a very taxing job in all respects.  Emotionally, physically, mentally...you're always running around doing shit.  People constantly seem to be telling nurses what to do whether it's the doctors or the administrators.  Then they use you as the scapegoat.  There's a reason that there are nursing shortages and that's because a lot of nurses are finding another profession.

It does seem like hard work. I often visit the hospital as I am a care giver for an autistic guy. He goes to the ER every time he pulls out his feeding tube, which is at least once a month. I know what you mean about the nurses being bossed around. My clients parents give nurses hell. They ask so much of them. They even ask them questions like can you turn up the heat in here. I always feel bad for the nurses.

One thing I heard about nursing schedules, which I found interesting, is the three 12 hour shifts that complete your work week. Most of my working life has consisted of this schedule. Right now I work one 8 and two 16 hour shifts to complete my work week. What I love is the free time you can have during the week. With only 3 days of work a week that gives me an opportunity to do things I love. Such as training somebody in a gym for some extra cash or working out myself.

Indeed. I think I am sold on nursing school.

There is just one issue that I look at. Do hospitals or employers in general distinguish in pay between somebody who is an RN with an associates degree and somebody who is an RN with a bachelors degree (BSN). I asked an RN I know and she said they dont distinguish between them on the name tags but she was not sure about the pay.

Although I think it could be useful to get a bachelors anyway because a masters would be right around the corner if I ever wanted a pay increase.

So yes. I have devoted myself to the idea of entering the medical field. Of course college for nursing will be challenging but one thing I have going for me is that I will be a hospital corpsman in the Navy. I am sure it does not compare completely but it might be a nice introduction kind of training. It may also help my resume and pay when applying for a hospital.

I really want to succeed in my goal here and so I want to take some baby steps. My first step will be hospital corpsman. I will return from Navy training in November of 2012. For the second step I would like to enroll into a community college and take some classes towards my BSN. After those classes and considering my prior degree I should be able to go to college for 2.5 years to get my bachelors in nursing. I would really like to reduce that to 1.5-2 years if they offer classes in the summer.

from what i understand an RN requires 4 years of education... you could get an associates in order to fulfill your math and science requirements but have to receive nurses training at an affiliated hospital.  one example is Mullenberg(sp?) hospital...  they closed the hospital but the nursing school itself remains open right now...  currently you'd get your associates from either Essex or Middlesex county college and complete your nursing credits at Mullenberg...  in new jersey an LPN is an associates equivalent and there's a huge difference between an LPN and an RN... LPN's are glorified phlebotomists in that they can reinsert IV's and things like that... i'll ask my sister for you and see what she says but i raised the issue of identifying level of education on name tags because when i was at somerset hospital with pancreatitis from the meds i was on the nurses all had either LPN, BSRN or MRN on their name tags...  whether they make that distinction at my sisters hospital, i'm not sure now to be honest since you bring up the nurse you talked to didn't, but my sister's education is already beyond a masters due to continuing education...  i believe the next step is a PA, physicians assistant... one of my friends from high school became a PA based on her experience as an ambulance tech that was trained to do field emergency medical procedures.  she's now an officer in the air force working on getting her MD license, so you see there are different paths you could follow.  what limits you is exactly how far you're willing to take your educationand personal life experiences.

Another field you might want to look into is Physical & Occupational Therapy. Your exercise physiology knowledge will make you an asset in these fields. It's much lower stress than RN, you still get to help people one on one, and there's a large growth rate in job demand over the next 10-20 years. I'm personally going the OT route, and while I haven't started the OT program yet, the time I've spent observing left a powerful impression on me.

I have a bachelors degree already so I am sure my credits will transfer. Especially since my original college and the colleges I am looking at are all passhe schools. That means the credits all transfer and I start with a fresh GPA.

I do not have chemistry under my belt though. That is why I want to look into community college. I would like to get small gen-eds out of the way before I depart to school for nursing. My plan is to do it as quickly yet as precisely as I can.

Impressive about your sister. Cheers to her. Thats great.

I think my initial goal is to get a bachelors, see how much money I have left over, and then look into my masters. I know that anesthesiologists make 6 figures, which is great. I would really love to try that program one day.
