Anyone Read "DMT The Spirit Molecule"??

I was wondering, if anyone had read Dr. Rick Strassman's book, DMT the Spirit Molecule?
I live in Australia, and have ordered it in, (although its coming from the U.S and not getting here until May).
What were others impressions on this book? Was it well written, and did it touch on some of the more abstract ideas about the role of DMT and human conciousness?

Any contributions appreciated.

Yes, I've read it, but it's been quite a while.

The author has a foot in both worlds: he's been a practising Buddhist for decades, but he's also committed to the narrow scientific approach, which some will like and others won't. This means he interrogated his subjects on the experience, but did not use his own experiences (I don't think he even had any) in his study. He's quite open-minded and he does discuss some philosophical implications of DMT, and also scientific ones (the most lingering for me being the function of the pineal gland).

It's a great read, but I've recently read another book, almost on the same subject, on the psychological phenomenology of Ayahuasca (contains DMT) in various settings. It was written by Benny Shanon, a cognitive psychologist from the University of Jerusalem. This one does include the author's experiences, which confers it something more, like when the anthropologists started to participate in the rituals of the tribes they studied rather than observing them from aside. Some very interesting philosophical ponderings there. I've already posted about this one, it's called "The Antipodes of the Mind", do a search on it. You may want to order that one after you've finished "DMT...".

It came as a surprise to me that the short-lived intravenous DMT experiences seem to be quite different from the longer ayahuasca ones. With pure DMT, there seems to be a lot more interactions with 'aliens' and 'elves' (see McKenna), often making fun of the sujects or submitting them to experiments, whereas ayahuasca seems to give more symbolic and mystical experiences. More scary experiences with pure DMT too, maybe because of the rocket-like onset of the effects. But there are, of course common grounds.

Can't wait to take ayahuasca (planned for late summer)... :cool:

DMT: The Spirit Molecule is the kind of a book that you would lend to your rational-thinking friend who doesn't have any experience with drugs and general flakey-ness. It serves its purpose really well, and I think it serves its purpose really well. I highly reccomend it. One of the things that I found most interesting is towards the end of the book, when the author tells about how his psilocybin research fell apart. These kind of drugs have a way of causing friction with "the establishment." ie: getting thrown out of his buddhist organization for daring to think that drugs have something to offer to Buddhism. The intolerance of the Buddhists was quite revealing to me.

i also enjoyed it :smile:  some of the experiences were pretty interesting. 
the alligator encounter was quite a surprize to that weird hippy guy  :blush: :grin:
